Ever since our newest site HTCYou launched today, I’ve had nothing on the brain but mobile phones and Asian pop songs. One thing that isn’t apparent about HTC despite being Google’s partner-in-crime in developing the Nexus One phone, is the fact that HTC is a company based in Taiwan. This leads me to wonder about HTC and how it’ll market its products stateside. Will it do as the Koreans do by creating entire songs and music videos dedicated to cell phones? If so, the list of Top 5 Asian pop music videos about mobile phones might be useful.
Hyori - AnyClub: Cell phone commercials to Koreans, are like car commercials to Americans. As it’s not uncommon for car commercials to be based off short-movies in America, it’s not uncommon for Korean cell phone commercials to be based off epic music videos that could very well be short films. Case-en-point: Hyori’s Anyclub music video featuring Kwon Sang Woo is about 12 minutes long. (See also the Anymotion, Anystar music videos.)
Big Bang & 2NE1 - Lollipop: How many pop groups debut with a song that promotes a new cell phone? Just one…2NE1 to be exact. That’s how serious these cell phone songs are. If you were reading any sexual connotations from this song, get your mind out of the gutter. This song is purely about the LG Lollipop phones. Take note of the use of the word “LED” in the rap section. (LED displays on Lollipop phones.)
Son Dambi & Afterschool - Amoled: I’m not gonna lie. Prior to educating myself about LED, OLED, AMOLED display technology, I thought the word AMOLED was some sort of poor attempt at making up a passable English word for Korean slang. It’s actually the technology featured in Samsung’s Amoled Haptic Touchscreen 3G phones that were released last year. The bright colors in this music video convey all that is AMOLED technology. Why yes, it is an actual song about display technology that’s specific to a Samsung phone.
Girls’ Generation - Chocolate Love and f(x) - Chocolate Love: It isn’t enough to have one girl group be brand ambassadors for LG’s Chocolate phone. For some reason LG thought it was absolutely necessary to have two groups do two versions of the same song about the same phone. Contrary to popular belief (or my own belief) it’s not actually the second part to Tay Zonday’s Chocolate Rain. Which do I like better? You can’t ask me. I kind of like them both.
Honorable Mention: Haptic Pop - Okay, okay, okay. I know Boys Over Flowers’ F4 isn’t a pop group but…I just can’t not say anything about their Samsung Haptic Pop commercials. What I love most about the Haptic Pop commercials is A) It features my favorite ELO song, “Mr. Blue Sky.” B) There are 3 Haptic Pop commercials, thus three times to be looking at F4. C) Did I mention there are 3 Haptic Pop commercials? and D) HUBBA HUBBA IT’S F4!!!!!!
Which music video do you like the most? Know of any music videos I’m missing?
