Being a big Final Fantasy fan, it’s shocking and disheartening to see one of the title’s most anticipated games get a low score of 40% in a Chinese magazine.

Here is the breakdown of the score:
System: 1/10 “Such a crude system barely warrants being called an RPG at all.”
Scenario: 2/10 “An epic tear jerker.”
Graphics: 9/10 “Top marks here.”
Sound: 7/10 “Mostly quality.”
Enthusiasm: 1/10 “As if you could play this for 100 hours! I could put up with 8.”
Total: 4/10 “To think it got this bad…”

He criticizes the game for being too linear and considers it to be more of a digital novel than a game due to its lack of gameplay strategy and RPG elements. He even goes as far as calling FFXIII the “biggest swindle in gaming history” and “biggest joke of 2009.” Ouch.

So what am I suppose to do now? Am I suppose to lower my expectations of the game so I can enjoy it more? Or were people overly hyped about its release and put too much high expectations on the game? Well, at least there’s one thing I do know for sure: I’m going to play this game no matter what people say. Why? Because I’m a Final Fantasy fangirl like that.

Here’s a scan of the review.

Hmm. well, the creators probably focused a lot more on the graphics than anything else. I’ve only seen screenshots, but from what I have heard and what people have said on this post, seems like the graphics were amazing. I’m guessing the creators put too much of their effort into producing epic graphics, that they didn’t focus too much on the plot and whatnots. :/

I agree with your scoring.. this is the first time ever in my life that I never fininshed the game. It’s so hard… to get money from those irksome looking ball, monsters get so ultimately hard every time, I really hate the fighitng system…

Ahh. Very disappointing :(

This is one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history! I HAVE every Final Fantasy to date, except for XI because I don’t have a hard drive for the PS2, and I used to wonder how I could even have played the older ones with how great the series has gotten over the last decade… boy was I wrong. DEAD WRONG. I believe this guy was being a little generous in his review, here’s mine:

SYSTEM: 0/10 (mainly because it gives you less choices than a Japanese dating simulator)
SCENARIO: 3/10 (I kind of liked the idea and story… bad implementation)
GRAPHICS: 10/10 (SUPERB… absolutely outstanding even in the “gameplay” aspect)
SOUND: 6/10 (normal, kind of weird for Square Enix’s standards)
ENTHUSIASM: 0/10 (I didn’t even bother playing for a FEW hours)

I believe this game was completely overhyped, like always, and took away what has made Final Fantasy so great, mainly the ADVENTURING part of the game. Overall, it completely fell apart. Just so you know, I’m only bashing the gameplay because if you were to put the computer on auto, they will do what they need to win without you even having to push another button. I just guess they think gamers are getting so lazy that we can’t even push buttons anymore…
I laugh because this game is getting such good reviews, but Heavy Rain gets pounded for it’s “lack” of gameplay. Heavy Rain will have much more gameplay than you ever will, XIII. I just hope that Versus won’t be so bad…

The scores are pretty good if you ask me.

haha, the person who wrote up on the review is on a chinese magazine right?? he obviously do not know how to read english @ all, even though its in Japanese, does he/she knows how to read?
no wonder he/she gives good graphics and sounds ratings, but lousy gameplay.... common, how can u judge a game when u does know wat it meant? UK and US game magazine reviews are givin thumbs up, even Japanese game magazines too ... its really a laughing stock to see bad reviews given by CHINESE people who does not know english well

You can always play it. It’s up to you if you like the game. Don’t let someone change your decision.

aw! i was really looking forward to playing this, since i’m a huge Final Fantasy fan.

whaaaaaaat???? I love FFXIII. but my friends don’t really like it...so I guess that’s why he gave it such a low review :/

^ I found the limited ed. book at a New Zealand game store’s website. That means we’re probably getting it smile Not sure if I have the money to buy all this >_<

I’m preordering the collector’s edition now. smile and I can also get a calendar or folder smile

The Final Fantasy XIII Limited Collectors Edition contains:

* FINAL FANTASY XIII Original Sound Selection: Soundtrack CD including a selection of music tracks from the game that are especially chosen for this Limited Collector’s Edition by composer Masashi Hamauzu. The CD is presented inside a slipcase featuring artwork from FINAL FANTASY XIII, and also liner notes that are written by the composer.

* The World of FINAL FANTASY XIII: Hardback book featuring character artwork, CG rendered artwork and environments from across the game production.

* Exclusive Art Prints: 3 highly collectable art prints showing artwork of the Eidolons, powerful summoned allies of the lead playable characters in FINAL FANTASY XIII

* Unique ‘Brand of the l’Cie’ decal: Collectible decal featuring this most iconic symbol from the game storyline

That actually sounds like an awesome collector’s edition. We need something like that over here…

We do NOT have that here in usa..wth so weird. The only thing we can get now is the special limited ed.  strategy guide with thicker paper and Hardcover.
Find it at gamestop for 34.99

^ Wahh! I want one! How cool! Why don’t we have one? Maybe we’re getting a PS3 bundle? That would be sweet.

^ A calendar or a clear file folder

Ooo! So lucky! (though you do have to pay more) I want a calendar! Why don’t they have that here? Hmmm. They’re probably saving it for the collector’s edition or something. If not, I’ll most likely have to ebay it. =)

^ Yeah, but if I do that, I might miss out on pre-order specials :( But then again, they’re nothing too special raspberry

Ooo! What kind of pre-order bonuses do you get? So far over here, there’s only a future $10 off coupon for Amazon game purchases. But that’s like the usual pre-order bonus for a lot of games released on Amazon. I want a collectible. I might have to cough up more money for the collector’s edition.

uh um yeah, completely agreed. i’m still going play this game not only because i’m a final fantasy fangirl, but pretty much a brand loyalist to the square enix name. so yeah, i don’t care what some chinese magazine says, it’s final fantasy xii. it may not have lived up to that guy’s expectations but it will live up to mine, and that’s a-okay in my book and all the reason i need and more to play. (^^)

stop whining alexa raspberry haha..

^ Australians will have to pay AUS$99 cheapest for the game.

That’s so much. You should try to import it. You could import rated Teen games right?

^
Ah okay, well the game should be releasing soon! smile

ludachris714 - 01/18/10 8:40 pm

^Yeah..

Im still gonna give it a try!

Ended already :(

I’m definitely getting the game despite what I’ve been hearing about it

There was a FFXIII demo released in Japan when the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Bluray came out.  I picked it up and played the demo that way ^_^

I know! I’ve always wanted to buy it. It’s pricey though. $60+. The cheapest I found it going for was $40 on ebay, but that’s still too much for me. =(

^ Do you have an Xbox 360? It will be out for that too.
