I know many of you have some very interesting… ideas on what Japanese school life is like. I can assure you that it’s far more dull than your brains have made it out to be. For example, here is a bit of dry history on what Japanese children eat at school each day in Hiroshima.

In 1950, lunch cost 6 yen 50 (smaller version of the yen that no longer exists)- and consisted of a small bread roll, a piece of chocolate and a glass of milk.

Now compare that to school lunches today…

From 2008, lunches went up to 220/265 yen per day and included milk, curry rice or similar often meat based main dish, cooked vegetable dish, soup and rice or bread. There was switch to serving rice 4 times per week and bread on the other days from 2006.

I think the author also forgot the part about the carton of whole (as in 100% pure) milk the kids get to drink with their lunches.

Here are some fun ‘Josh’ learned school lunch facts, Japanese kids (usually) have to eat the school lunch. There (usually) is no outside lunches allowed. Best of all, you can’t get up from lunch until you’ve finished your school lunch. Trust me, you’ve not seen a small child cry until you force them to eat a bowl full of squid.

But no matter what country you’re in, school lunch is bound to suck. Especially if you’re being forced to eat whale (or dolphin) with your school lunch.

Community colleges don’t get those things like tacobell

What city are you in?
IVC and OCC have them here and both are community colleges.
I think Goldenwest has it too since its the same owned district.

nope, it might be because its a community college though, but i have 2 malls across the street, although only one of them has a food court. i’m too lazy to walk off campus though, even though i’m a fast walker, i’m afraid of being late to my next class


food at my university sucks arse…
when I went to japan over winter break, I ate at 2 universities there. food was heck of a lot better! and cheaper too :D. I think it was about 3.50 for a meal. while here at my school, when you divide the cost of dining by number of meals for the whole semester, its like 8 dollars each meal. so much cheaper and tastier in japan :D

I kinda want to assume that if Japanese Universities have good food, then elementary/middle/high school would also, but that might be a stretch of an assumption.


the food at my com college is like french fries and taco’s :/ Snack machines and such.

There is a dunken donuts outside the school, as well as a burger king and a papa gino’s

Colleges serve food from Taco Bell or Pizza Hut? I didn’t know that. The university and community college I went to makes all their food.

Was the food any good or crap?
My friends who studied in Korea said u can get a full course Korean meal at University for the equivalent of 3.00 here and was pretty decent.

It was much worse back in the days. Nowadays Taco Bell and Pizza hut are part of most lunch programs in California here, but thats pretty generic unhealthy food if ask me.


my school food aint that bad… :D lucky me!


Or that whale prices are at historic low, so its a cheap meat to throw into school lunch.

Sigh…

I have hope that budget cuts will cancel all Japanese whaling practices.  Thanks new Japanese government.

Now we just have to get people to stop eating dolphins as well…

A friend of mine in Hiroshima posted a nice facebook status last week about how “It must be #uck the whales day in Japan, because every kid in Hiroshima is getting whale for lunch today.”

I’m happy I missed it.

LOl I figure that Japan is all about efficiency. They probably think
OH wow this 1 whale can feed all the kids in Japan! And best of all theres no competition to take them! GOLD MINE $$$

I like the food at my college too, especially at my old college. It was buffet style. Talk about Freshman 15. It was more like Freshman 20. =\

I did come across pictures where students were given really tasty looking meals In Japan, so not every school is like this..

Anything, and I mean ANYTHING can beat the school lunches I went through throughout elementary until high school. Even the food at my college sucks.

No matter what it is or where it is, it’s low quality and bound to taste like… nothing, if you’re lucky.

who cares if its LQ, its still Asian food. which means it is bound to taste decent! ^_^

Just because it’s Asian doesn’t really change anything…


yeah so much cardboard fillers in school food >_<
