Who is Rilakkuma? What does he want? (I’ll give you a hint, it’s not your porridge.) Where does he come from? And why is everyone making such a big fuss about his US Debut?
According to Wikipedia….
Rilakkuma mysteriously appears in the female office worker Kaoru’s apartment one day. He is a soft toy bear who has apparently decided to take up residence there. On his back is a zipper which when opened reveals a light blue polka dot patterned material. The contents or nature of this zipper is unknown.
Oh I’m sold…
The reality is that Rilakkuma is a bear that first appeared in the book
. Since then everyone in Japan has been buying up things with his image stuck on them. Much like a ugly younger sister of Hello Kitty who was forced to go to school the next town over to escape the pressure of living with someone so popular and soulless.
The big news is that Rilakkuma is going to have a massive US Debut at JapanLA. No doubt the US marketing blitz will be hitting us all soon, and we’ll be buying boxes of Rilakkuma brand mustard within the year.
