Today’s session of Music Video of the Day features the multi-talented Utada Hikaru and her beatifully directed music video FINAL DISTANCE straight off of her DEEP RIVER album. Here’s a little background to the song: Originally titled Distance, Utada rearranged the song into ballad form after hearing about a stabbing incident involving eight elementary students’ deaths. One of the eight was a little girl named Rena Yamashita who won an essay competition writing about how she wanted to grow up to be like Utada. And so, Utada rushed to create the song to put it on her album DEEP RIVER. And that’s how FINAL DISTANCE came to be. To simply summarize the song in one word: beautiful. From the piano and orchestra to Utada’s voice, I can feel a lot of emotion pouring into the song. Even the music video is full of emotion with Utada’s two characters desperately trying to reach each other. The music video may not make much sense, but I like the creativity and effort put into the video. In my opinion, I would call this video a work of art.

I love this song and the PV (or MV) is very well done. Utada Hikaru’s voice is really amazing, especially for ballads.

I guess if you put it that way

I know, it’s so happy sounding, complete opposite of the actual reason for the song

Yeah I like it. But actually Final Distance is a rearranged ballad of her song Distance, which is originally an upbeat song. So the song could have many different interpretations.

I think the first one is a bit to slow for me

wow i like both the regular and m-flo remix <3

I like this MV too! It made me follow the director Kazuaki Kiriya’s work. He even directed my favorite MVs from Utada Keep Tryin’ and Passion. They’re both super talented. Too bad they broke up. =\

Ah such a good song. A sad song though.

There is another version done by m-flo that sounds really good, but it doesn’t sound super sad

I love this version! It’s been my first and only ringtone ever since I got a phone. smile

The direction of and theme of this mv is some of the coolest ever. The budget must be pretty big

this is one of my top 3 utada songs! along with Colors and First Love.
