Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou has expressed his anger towards a beer company for using a promotional picture of him in one of their commercials. The beer commercial is linked to a recent martial arts film that Jay guest starred in.
Jay’s company says that, “We told them long ago we do not approve of such a use. The contract states that our permission has to be sought for anyone to use the picture.” The ad company responded by saying that the picture of him was from a promotional poster which garners a “fair use” policy.
JVR, the company that manages Jay Chou’s affairs, is saying that the picture of him was cropped and intentionally put right next to a picture of the beer, implying that Jay himself was promoting the beer. Jay, however, has no part in the beer promotions.
A representative from JVR concluded by saying that, “So even if they use a famous person’s poster for a condom ad, we can’t do anything?”
