Kim Hyun Ah of the girl group 4minute has been stirring up quite a buzz lately. Her recent solo single called “Change” has received critical acclaim from many of her fans. Many look up to her as an idol and a model. She is rumored to have over 300 “charms,” but is she really all she’s cracked up to be? Find out what Tuc thinks…
I’m going to preface this with “I’m not an anti-fan, and I’m certainly not jealous of Hyun Ah.” Why? Because you’d be amazed at how many people jump to those conclusions when you say something the least negative about someone they admire.
Putting that aside, let’s all recall how old Hyun Ah is; she’s 17 years old. That’s right, still under-aged in many parts of the world. The MV for her latest solo single “Change” was slapped with a 19+ rating. Technically, she can’t even watch her own music video. Sex sells, yes, but is it really appropriate to be selling such a theme from a minor? Call me a conservative, but I say NO, it’s not appropriate. What does this teach all the young girls out there that look up to Hyun Ah? “You can change.” Into what? A skank? What were her producers thinking? Obviously about the money.
Many will say that she’s not to blame for this “concept,” but I would beg to differ. It’s very clear in all of the 4minute performances that she really does go the extra mile to make a sexual appeal (ie. slipping off her jacket, random pelvic thrusts, shirt lifting, etc.). You can tell that she knows well what she’s doing, and that she enjoys every minute of it (no pun intended).
Clearly in the appearance realm of things she doesn’t set a very good example, but she also sets some really bad examples in terms of mannerisms. During the 2009 Golden Disk Awards, 4minute won the Rookie of the Year award. The leader of the group, Jihyun (not Hyun Ah), was giving a speech. As Jihyun is talking, you can see that Hyun Ah slowly tries to make her way to a microphone with the other members clearly telling her not to. Obviously showing little respect for both her superior and elder, Hyun Ah waits for Jihyun to take a breath and blatantly interrupts Jihyun to make her own two-sentence speech. Okay, sure, she was excited about winning, but so were the other members. Even the youngest of the group, Sohyun, knew that she should yield to Jihyun. In this situation, she was no better than Kanye West. If you would like to see the video, click here.
My advice to her: Tone it down. You’re not as great as you think.
