If Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro was medicine, I’d say it’d be the cure for old age. Sure, I’m only 25 but a lot of things remind me of my old age on a daily basis. Justin Bieber, body aches and pains in places never before and the constant urge to fight every possible chance to leave home to name a few. Staying in one night to watch the special edition DVD of My Neighbor Totoro was like having the fountain of youth in front of me, in DVD format.

My Neighbor Totoro isn’t so much a kids-only movie as it’s got a charm that appeals to pretty much…anyone. The story goes like this: Two young girls, Satsuki and Mei, move into a small country town and happen to befriend a forest spirit named Totoro. Totoro is hidden to adults and can only be seen through the eyes of a child. Throughout the movie interesting not-so-imaginary forest creatures are introduced. There isn’t one encounter with a forest creature that doesn’t make you question, “Was this something I would’ve imagined or made up as a child?” For children, the questions they’ll be asking themselves, “How cool is this movie?!?!”

Speaking of cool, here’s just a run-down of cool features that the 2-disc special edition DVD packs:
- A storyboard presentation of the movie
- The World of Ghibli, an interactive experience where you get to meet the Totoro characters and go behind the scenes and view interviews with the man himself, Miyazaki.
- A collectible litho

Japanese is always the way to go. If you’re not used to reading subtitles, then English is more suited for you.

^ Would you recommend the Japanese version? ;O

I haven’t seen the English version, but I will soon. I did watch it in Japanese with English subtitles though.

^ Yeah, I kind of disagree with the Ponyo voice over people though… >_>

There’s a lot of famous actors used for the English voice overs. (In practically all his films)

^ yup that was my first one, i loved the little kitty

I remember seeing so many Kiki’s Delivery Service commercials when I was younger.

These are all wonderful to watch. I read somewhere that they would start putting these movies on Blu-ray. I hope that’s true because Ponyo is the first.
