In Wakayama, Japan a 42-year-old man was arrested for speeding on a motorcycle last year. How did they catch the guy? His friend posted a video of him speeding on popular video streaming sites YouTube and Nico Nico Douga. Nice going there Einstein.
Police have been investigating the matter since September of last year after they received a call about footage of a man driving a motorcycle about 188 kilometers an hour. They were finally able to identify the person who uploaded the video and it turns out that he was just the owner of the bike. Apparently he lent his motorcycle to a friend after he had attached a video camera to the gasoline tank.
The video revealed Hiroaki Iwahashi, the perpetrator, riding 188 km/hr in a 55 km/hr area (shown on the speedometer). He was promptly arrested. This was the first case in which a person was arrested for speeding due to an online video.
Seriously, what was the friend thinking when he posted the video online? Sure, it may have looked cool and all but it’s not going to go unnoticed if it involved breaking the law. Iwahashi is probably cursing his friend right now in jail…
