Zhou Shaomou, author of the Chinese online novel Tale of the Blue Crows, is suing the creator of the movie Avatar, James Cameron, claiming that Cameron stole ideas from Zhou’s novel.
Zhou’s novel is about six astronauts that travel to a distant planet inhabited by blue people. “I wrote in my novel that their space journey took them six years but in Cameron’s movie the journey takes them five years, nine months and 22 days. I was shocked when I first saw that. It is too close.” Many are criticizing Zhou for thinking that such a big-shot producer like Cameron would steal his ideas. To this he replied, “Why not?”
I think that the last statement really exemplifies what this is really all about: money. People are just trying to get their “fair share” of this movie. Let’s face it people: Just because your story has blue people in it, doesn’t mean that Cameron stole your ideas.
