Since 1992, Singapore has upheld a law that if you broke it, you could get caned (yeowch!). A pretty painful punishment for chewing gum but there’s a good reason for that.

Before the ban, blobs of gum had become so troublesome that subway doors were kept from closing (which led to delays). The ban is necessary to keep Singapore a healthy, clean environment without gum littering and vandalism.

A clean city is more important than the freedom to chew gum,” says the secretary of the national development ministry, Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman. If the ban was lifted, people might start littering gum again and dirty the environment (however, medicinal gum is allowed). Better to be safe than sorry!

You know, the ban isn’t such a bad idea. I’m sure most of us had to sit at the dirty desk at school with all the gum littered on the bottom, brushing against your legs and hands. I know I have and it’s gross! However, I love to chew gum and it helps to keep me awake during some of my classes. It wouldn’t be the end of the world for me if gum was banned in the U.S. but chewing it is one of the pleasures I would rather keep.

^ Take any pictures for those 5 hours?

Did you perhaps chew gum illegally while there? raspberry

^ I’ve only been there for 5 hours, but you know. It is beautiful ^^

^ I have never been there, so I can’t answer that, but I’ll just assume you’re right.

Gum isn’t beneficial what-so-ever. This is the reason why Singapore is so beautiful. Notice that there are no BLACK SPLODGES on the ground.

I don’t care about gum at all, so it’s fine with me. It just hurts my jaw because of all the chewing necessary.

The gums stuck under the desks are soo disgusting… at my school, there’s this picture hanging on the wall that the students seem to take a lot of pleasure in stucking their gums on. Gross. There’s a specific place where you can put all of your gums, it’s called a garbage can. Thank you ¬.¬

However, I love to chew gum. A lot. It helps me to keep my stress down.

me too! since my hair is always tied in a ponytail XD
really? if ever a gum gets stuck in my hair ill definitely try it out

but the bubble would be like huge right? for it to get on her hair.. or maybe someone is just really mean and stuck a gum on her hair! that would be just horrible D:

I don’t know...I’ve never gotten gum stuck in my hair. I always read that you should put peanut butter in your hair if gum does get stuck there though.

Ahhh, maybe she was blowing bubbles? ;O

peanut butter trick?:O i dont know about that.. how do you do it?
i dont know what happen cuz like the next day, she just came in the class with her short hair..

^ That sucks! Did she try the old peanut butter trick before cutting it? :(
How’d she get it stuck in her hair?

its horrible when it sticks! i felt really sorry for my friend since she had to cut her hair really short because she got gum on her hair D:

^ Yes, but slightly less so. At least it doesn’t stick. >_<

I wouldnt mind a gum ban. I have accidentally touched too much gum under desks and tables. its sick.

I wouldn’t mind a gum ban either. I also vote for a cleaner city than freedom to chew gum. I don’t think there would be too much protests. But when people would start being punished for breaking the rule, then it might be a problem and cause a lot of debate.

Wow, haven’t heard of this before. I love gum though, even if it IS disgusting to find chewed pieces of it everywhere. xP
