No one fills us with more glee than Glee’s Jenna Ushkowitz. Jenna is best known on Glee as Tina, the stutter-er who not long ago, revealed that she’s not who you think she is. Jenna, on the other hand, has no problems revealing who she is and was nice enough to answer our questions for her.
JI: Can you tell us how you got your start in show business?
JU: My parents put me in at the age of 3 in commercials and Print. My first job was a Playskool Print ad. I really got into Musical Theatre when I made my Broadway debut in ‘The King and I’ Revival in 1996. I fell in love with singing and dancing and pursued it in high school and college. I was in my ‘Select Choir’ in high school (which was our version of glee, I guess) and I took acting, dance and voice everyday in high school. I have a BA in Acting and a minor in Musical Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College. About 6 months later, I got the role of a swing in the Broadway musical ‘Spring Awakening’ and then I ended up booking Glee a year later!
JI: While a lot of us are big Gleeks, can you fill us in on the character you play for those just tuning in to Glee?
JU: Tina is a gothic, punk/geek rocker who likes to sing and dance. She has a dark rebellious side to her but really feels at home in the Glee Club with her friends. Her and Artie had a short lived romantic relationship until she revealed she had been lying about her stutter since the 6th grade.
JI: What do you enjoy the most about being a Glee cast member?
JU: Being able to work, learn and grow with the amazing cast and fantastic writers, directors and crew. We get to sing, dance and act on TV and we are creating something that hasn’t been done many times before in the TV world. We are also giving our viewers something relate-able and real.
JI: With Glee returning in April, is there any details you can give on what to expect from your character Tina or the show in general?
JU: You can expect a full episode of Madonna Music, a lot more Glee club numbers, maybe some more Vocal Adrenaline and some new and old relationships :)
JI: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects you’re working on?
JU: I believe Glee will be touring over the summer, details to follow!
JI: What’s one thing about you that we should all know?
JU:That I am a very positive person and make that a conscious effort everyday.
Your efforts do not go unnoticed, Jenna! Glee returns to Fox tomorrow, Tuesday, April 13 at 9:28/8:28c. For more information, visit the official Glee site here.
