Two Chinese singers, Fang Ziyuan and Yin Youcan, were fined 50,000 yuan (~7,325 USD) for lip-synching at a concert last September and people are speculating why they are the first ones to be fined under the “no lip-synching law.”
After Lin Miaoke was exposed for lip-synching at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony in 2008 (taking credit from Yang Peiyi- the actual vocalist; both pictured on the left), China decided to make lip-synching illegal and fine these “criminals” with a hefty amount of cash.
Lip-synching is not uncommon in China. Many television shows and performances do have people miming the voices (like Zhang Ziyi in recent years) which makes people speculate why two unknown singers are the first to be fined. Oh and get this, they were only back up singers.
I’m all for natural talent and no lip-synching but I think the fine is way too high. It’s just so much money for such a small offense (as compared to other crimes).
