I’m not the biggest fan of SNSD’s cute concepts, and as I revealed a little while back, some of the SNSD members, like Seohyun, aren’t big fans of some of their own songs either. Well, on an episode of KBS Win Win, set to air today, the leader of SNSD, Taeyeon, admitted that she had a hard time swallowing the cutesy “Gee” concept that most will argue was the turning point in the group’s career.

“It was hard for me to digest the cute concept as a 19-year-old when promoting Gee, because I thought it didn’t match me. I had thoughts of needing to show fans a different side of me, rather than the cute concept we always had. However, I saw the other members trying hard, and came to reflect on my immature thoughts.” Fellow group member Yuri also added her own comment by saying that, “Being asked to sing in a voice that sounds like a rolling marble across when I have a husky voice was stressful.”

To me this is quite tragic, especially in the case of very talented artists like Taeyeon. She must have hated the switch from the “Genie” concept to the “Oh!” concept. Taeyeon seems to be suffocating from not being able to show off her true vocal skills. It seems to me like SM Entertainment is a pretty overbearing company in comparison to some of the other music giants out there, and the dictation of new concepts and songs lay solely in the hands of the guy in charge. If I ran the world (or just a music company), I would get feedback from my artists to see what they would like to do, regardless of whether or not it would get them to the top. If it weren’t for the artists, these companies would get nowhere.

But, hey, I guess to each their own, right? If Korea wants cutesy music appealing to pre-pubescent boys, then why not?

I was surprised back then when I heard that Taeyeon didn’t like the cutesy concept of Gee because I like her there. At least now, the RDR concept suits her voice very much. SNSD hwaiting!


i prefer when girls sing a little lower in general, thats why i loved WG’s Irony so much, sunmi’s husky voice was <3

I think it’s sort of like, someone that is pleasing and entertaining because of their childlike innocence and cute image. Something like that? Unless I’m thinking of a completely other word ._.

I have a lot of respect for Taeyeon and she certainly deserves to be able to showcase her amazing vocals. I’m glad she gets to do a little bit of that in Run Devil Run, though I hope she gets more vocally challenging songs soon.

And I feel bad for Yuri...she has a nice voice.
