As many of you know, I have been recently covering the new girl group from Starship Entertainment called SISTAR. The group is composed of four girls, Hyorin, Soyu, Dasom and Bora. The group seems pretty promising thus far, and I have high hopes for these ladies. Keep reading to find out a little bit more of what I have to think about the group and its members.

Right now, the Korean pop music industry really isn’t as focused on “talent” as much as I would like it to be. Sure, the songs nowadays are “catchy,” but catchy songs tend to get old and burn out pretty fast. Talent is what I’m interested in, hence my liking of YG artists and groups like After School. SISTAR is a group that I might soon be adding to my list. Breaking from the traditional “cute and sexy” girl concept, these ladies are taking a page out of 2NE1’s book, and it looks like they’ll be rocking the “fierce female” concept. A lot of people say that are “copying” 2NE1, and all I have to say is this: What’s wrong with that? 2NE1 has a very good thing going on here, and it’s great to see that their style is influencing other up and coming groups. This is a revolution in music happening right before your eyes! Never thought about that, huh?

Anyway, here’s my rundown of the members of the group:

Hyorin (효린):

Hyorin is the leader of SISTAR. Last week, a video of her signing Christina Aguilera’s “Hurt” was released, and it gained quite a bit of attention. Don’t be deceived by her skinny demeanor, because this girl can rock it in the vocal department. While small parts of the song sounded a bit strained, keep in mind that this was her audition video. That means that she ought to have improved significantly by now. It’s nice to have a leader that can actually sing for a change (*cough*4minute*cough*). If you haven’t seen her cover yet, check it out below:

Soyu (소유):

The second member of the group is named Soyu. While not much has been revealed about her yet, we do know that she can definitely sing. In her portion of the Samsung CF, Soyu did a short cover of Baek Ji Young’s “Don’t Forget” from the Korean drama IRIS. No offense to Ji Young, but Soyu definitely rocked this song (perhaps even better than the original artist…). Many are calling her a physical cross between SNSD’s Seohyun and Yuri. Check out her portion of the CF below:

Dasom (다솜):

The third member, Dasom, is still shrouded in mystery. Not much has been revealed about her yet, other than what was shown in the CF. My guess is that she’s the token “maknae” of the group. She’s certainly got “the look” for it. At this point, I’m just hoping that she can sing and dance decently in comparison to the other members… We certainly don’t want another Sohee… Here’s her short little dancing clip:

Bora (보라):

The last member of SISTAR is Bora, the rapper. She’s definitely got the rapper look, by which I mean she’s totally rocking the “HBIC (Head b*tch in charge)” look. From what I’ve seen so far, her dancing is pretty good, and she definitely has a charisma about her. No word yet on her rapping skills, but I imagine she should be at least decent enough to be the only rapper in the group. Check out her dance cover of “Get Your Hands Up” by Fergie:

So, that’s my rundown of the group at this point in the game. My only hope right now is that Starship has a good marketing team. They’re off to a good start with the Samsung promotions, but they’re going to need a lot more than that to catch the attention of these Oh!-obsessed Koreans!

What do you think?
