Consider this phase 2 of the K-pop Flashback: Super Junior edition. A couple of days ago we rewound time to see where SuJu was 1 year ago. How about jumping in a Kpop time machine and traveling back to 2008? 2008 was a significantly busy year for Super Junior. Why? Because they spawned one of Asia’s most popular sub-groups: Super Junior-M.
On April 8, 2008, Super Junior-M (M for Mandarin) debuted in China. The group consists of Super Junior’s Han Geng, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, Khyuhyun with the addition of Henry and Zhou Mi. 2 years ago, Henry and Zhou Mi were fresh meat in the Asian Market and for some psycho reasons, only grumpy netizens can fathom, these two were faced with loads of criticism.
Controversy brewed the minute SM Entertainment announced the possibility of including a non-SuJu member (Henry) to the sub-group. There was angst. So much so, that unsatisfied fans gathered in protest against the agency’s decisions. People went as far as creating a website called ‘Only 13′ to make it clear that they weren’t having it. The resentment eventually died down, and Super Junior-M blossomed into a massive success in China.
The group debuted with their first single “U,” a cover of the original Korean version. In fact, that’s what SuJu-M’s focus was in reaching into the Chinese market; To spread the K-pop love, only in Mandarin. They followed it up with their second release, “Me.”
2008 saw the birth of Super Junior-M and also Super Junior’s first Asian tour: Super Show. The live concert tour hit big cities around Asia, such as Seoul, Bangkok, Shanghai, Nanjing, Jiangsu, among others. The show was such a success, that the group hit the stage again for Super Show 2 the following year.
I won’t lie, there’s a total Super Junior overload going on right now, but with good reason. 5 days from now the boys will go at it again when they make their live comeback on MusicBank on May 14. Stay tuned!
