Behind those happy faces may well be some sad stories. Daniel Gauss, a former English tutor for the Wonder Girls has been in e-mail communication with The Korea Herald and has revealed some unsettling information about how the five-member group was treated by the JYP Entertainment company in the United States. Keep reading to find out what allegedly happened.

First of all, The Korea Herald has confirmed with JYPE that Daniel Gauss was indeed a former private English tutor at the company. That being said, whether this information is one hundred percent accurate or not is still up in the air. I’m going to give The Korea Herald the benefit of the doubt, however, and publish this information.

Gauss has revealed that the girls were housed in the JYPE company building illegally. In addition, he revealed that he was “… shocked when one of the girls told me that the girls are not covered by health insurance in America… I once saw one girl in extreme pain — due to a pre-existing problem stemming from a previous operation — who received no professional medical treatment for the pain and I saw others with minor ailments go untreated.

JYPE was later fined $2,500 for the illegal housing and was scheduled for a court appearance for which neither he nor a representative showed up for. The housing violation can be confirmed via this link.

Gauss also alleges that Park Jin Young used cheap marketing tactics to inflate the Billboard rankings of the Wonder Girls’ single, Nobody. He said that JYPE had sold the single for $1 at retail clothing shops across the United States, which significantly boosted both its sales and its rankings in the Billboard Hot 100 charts. When The Korea Herald questioned the company, a marketing employee, David Hyun, stated that, “That was part of our distribution deal and that is definitely one of the reasons why they cracked the top 100.” When pressed further on the subject, Hyun refused to answer anymore questions.

Back when JYP received the Sony Ericsson sponsorship, Gauss claims that Sunye was rushed to China to perform for Sony executives, despite the fact that Sunye’s father had just fallen into a coma. Gauss says that, “… her father had stopped breathing and had to be rushed to the hospital. In the ambulance, (Sun-ye) and her family had to decide whether the father should be given treatment to be kept alive since he had lapsed into a coma. The family chose to keep him alive and I was told by the girl that he was never going to come out of the coma.

The Korea Herald’s attempts to confirm these allegations with members of the company have thus far been unsuccessful. The allegations have been dismissed by the company, but Gauss states that, “I cannot profit in any manner by revealing this information… I believe my motives are genuine. I did not ask for any compensation for any of this information and I do not want any. I saw and heard about some nasty things at JYPE and I think people have a right to know the truth, especially since the girls are under contract for the next three-plus years and might not be able to speak freely about negative aspects of their experience.

UPDATE: JYPE responded to the allegations today:

Jung Wook, CEO of JYP Entertainment stated that, “The interpretation of events was skewed due to cultural differences. There wasn’t any problem and we don’t understand why the problem was brought up now.

Regarding the housing situation, he said that, “The JYP Center in Manhattan is the same structurally as the one in Korea. We proposed to the Wonder Girls that they stay in a New Jersey house, but the girls told us that they preferred to stay in Manhattan so we let them. A two story housing structure is built there.

And regarding the health insurance information, he said that, “It’s not like the Wonder Girls couldn’t speak about it, if there was an issue like that, do you think they would just sit back and take it? The girls are constantly going between Korea and America while doing activities. No matter how busy they were, if they weren’t receiving professional medical attention and were being treated unjustly, no matter what you would have been notified by someone.

Finally, regarding Sunye’s situation, he stated that, “To say she performed because she wanted to benefit the company is wrong.

JYPE plans to take legal action against Daniel Gauss for his defamatory allegations.

I know this is a lot to take in. So take some time to process it, and then come back and comment on what you think about the situation.

I trust the Wonder Girls! >.<

Well, I must agree on the part that says “If you’re a top class star like the Wonder Girls, your health is our first priority.”

Mannnn o.o That’s crazy..

I trust no one that I don’t know personally and I know none of these people but from the way it sounds the CEO has stuff to hide and so does everyone else.  It will be what it will be and they (JYPE) just needs to keep in mind that what goes on behind closed doors comes to light eventually.  If I were JYPE, I would be very careful about how I let the WGs leave the company because if they aren’t then we may find out some stuff that they were trying to hide and that they don’t want us to know.

I must agree with @conkwe

Wait, what’s wrong with selling your CDs for a $1? I see how some people view it as a cheap marketing tactic and how it sold a lot because it was cheap. But it may actually be one of the best marketing tactics out there for artists breaking into the U.S. industry. It got their single on the top 100 and helped them gain attention to help boost their debut. Not much wrong with that. And selling singles for $1 may be cheap, but maybe the average selling price for singles are just too expensive. They don’t cost much to make. We should be thankful that the company released this for exposure and not to dig out our pockets for money.

The health care matter I honestly don’t really care about. Aren’t there a lot of big musicians that are not under health care by their company? A lot of record companies aren’t obliged to provide health care, and like Jung said, JYPE doesn’t have to either. I remember hearing before that it’s also legally impossible for some companies to provide health care because of the non-employer-and-employee relationship (I don’t know if this is true or not or if there are any loop holes around this situation). If the girls still wanted health care, they would’ve paid it out of their own pockets (which I think a lot of musicians already do).

But the housing violation was just a stupid move by JYPE. It sucks how their situation escalated to court hearing stuff when all of this could have been prevented.

Overall, this stuff didn’t really changed my view of JYPE in a negative way. They’re just like almost every other record company out there. Though, they really do need to be more careful about the small stuff (like that housing violation situation).

i don’t know what to believe but i just hope that the Wonder Girls are taken care of and is not being treated badly.

i hope they really are being treated nicely like sunye says. i’ll trust her (:

Just because those millions of people dont have it doesnt mean the Wonder Girls shouldnt either. And its true what he said, people as top notch at Wondergirls NEED health insurance cause they basically make half of the income for JYPE. Without them as apart of their company JYPE wouldn’t be where they’re at riht now

^^YES, just trust them, indeed

sunye gave a very leaderly and thorough response

But JYP and Wonder Girls have such a close relationship I doubt he’d do all that stuff ... I trust the Wonder Girls!!! and yh as ilovekimty said I think this is all a misunderstanding of how each country usually treats their artists ...

We just gotta trust them. :]

It’s great that they were able to clarify those stories, which I will give WG the benefit of the doubt, because it’s from the source(s). Also, the story is very different when coming from Wonder Girls.

I think Gauss’s concern is genuine, though, but at the same time lacking in true discernment. I don’t know how close his or her ties are with his or her culture, but, as I know, the Korean entertainment companies like JYP, YG, and SM all pack their artists schedule like crazy. Mistreatment? Possibly, but I think the artists know what they’re going into, and that the artists of America don’t have the same schedules they do.

From the Ningin blog, by TucTo on 05/12/2010 3:00pm (original link)

Wonder Girls Sunye, Yeeun and Yubin have all responded in one way or another to the allegations against JYP Entertainment made by former-English tutor Daniel Gauss. Keep reading to see what they had to say…

All we can do is trust the Wonder Girls and have faith that they are ok and making the right choices.
