After a six year halt of propaganda broadcasts, South Korea has restarted its psychological warfare on the border after the North was blamed for a torpedo strike that sank the warship Cheonan and killed 46 sailors back in March 26. The South has placed loudspeakers and has begun blasting radio broadcasts into the North, including a splash of Kpop.
South Korean pop songs have been used as an expression of freedom of choice on the heavily militarized border, one of which has been noted to be 4Minute’s latest single HuH. Bomi Lim of Bloomberg writes, In the tune, “Huh,” the band sings: “When I say I want to appear on TV, when I say I want to become prettier, everybody says I can’t do it. Baby, you’re kidding me? I do as I please.”
The broadcast began at 6PM on FM Radio. But not just with Kpop. The South has aired Western music, news and comparisons between the South and North on economic and political situations. They plan to install additional loudspeakers and electronic billboards to send messages welcoming Northern soldiers to defect to the South.
Tensions are definitely on high alert right now. On Tuesday (today), North Korea accused the South of trespassing and has threatened to retaliate with military action.
Hyung Jin-Kim of the Associated Press writes, “The North warned Monday it would fire at any propaganda facilities installed in the Demilitarized Zone.”
South Korea has suspended trade and denied permission of Norther ships to pass through its waters.
Things are getting real frightening really fast. I hope Korea’s problems can be resolved properly and nothing too drastic happens. The last thing the world needs is another war.
How does everyone feel about this?
