While the world is ready to go head-to-head this June in South Africa, South Korean networks are having a little fight of their own now that SBS is taking over broadcasting rights of this year’s World Cup finals.
Recently, SBS acquired contracts and rights to air major sporting events (including the World Cup) from 2010 to 2016. As soon as this occurred, rival networks MBC and KBS retaliated, saying SBS betrayed their agreement to jointly buy broadcasting rights for sport coverage.
In the suit filed with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, MBC said, “SBS agreed to jointly buy the broadcasting rights to the Olympics and World Cup tournaments. But it then used the information it gained from the talks (with KBS and MBC) to its advantage and purchased the broadcasting rights on its own,” MBC continued, “SBS has infringed on viewers’ rights and inflicted a heavy loss on MBC.”
Basically, MBC and KBS (who has also filed a suit on Thursday) will lose a ton of viewers this June while SBS airs the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup. SBS has responded by going ahead with their plans and air the games, stating that negotiations with rival networks to share broadcasting rights had ended.
Personally, I’d be a little ticked off, too. It’s pretty obvious that South Korea has gone beyond patriotism, with all the World Cup songs and promotions, so having no piece of the pie is a huge bummer. Are you guys ready for the World Cup, or could you care less?

O my… ahh. >< Hope it works out soon.
Soccer is the only sport I can stand watching, which is kind of lucky because SBS is the only channel that WANTS to take stuff like the Fifa World Cup. The other channels are too busy trying to get their hands on the most AFL coverage v.v”
I can see why KBS and MBC are pissed, but business is business so really they should have expected it
i don’t watch it, but i know a lot of people in korea are revved up about it. sbs is in the wrong if they had an agreement.

well as much as that sucks, thats business?
although in a happy society mbc, kbs, and sbs would share everything equally, no one’s really blaming sbs for taking a monopoly.
its like how they did it in the us for the olympics
05/28/10 10:21 pm
