Back in 2007, only a few idol groups surfaced such as Wonder Girls and SNSD. However, in less than 3 years, idol groups debut at a lightning-speed rate. Neo Bob did a survey amongst 541 people from May 10 - 28, asking ‘Which is the leading pop girl group for the Korean mass culture?’

The results show Girls’ Generation/SNSD at #1 with 38.2% of the votes, followed by Wonder Girls and KARA at #2 and #3 position on the survey results with 35.6% and 23.4% of the votes.

Shin JaeKyu representative of Neo Bob said, “By ‘pop girl’ we are talking about the leader of trends amongst the new generation females. Through this survey, we got to know how much of such an influence SNSD, Wonder Girls and KARA have on their fans. SNSD, who is at #1, are not only leading in terms of their albums, but also in terms of various genres like CF appearances and corporate sales. SNSD is representative pop girl group who inspires the 3040 ‘uncle’ fans.”

The representative added, “Wonder Girls is the first domestic girl group who has successfully advanced into the American market. Wonder Girls, to their fans, is a girl group who shows their inspiration and hardwork for new challenges, and are known for being the cutie-sexy girl group. And KARA is a team known for being outspoken and reflecting the latest trends.”

I think this is all a popularity contest based on seniority. If you think about it, more talented groups have also came out like 2NE1 who didn’t need the cute or sexy looks to make a FIERCE statement…in less than a year of debut!
