I was asking my friend the other day about what’s the difference between the Korean word “babo” and the Japanese word “baka”…they both mean “idiot” but “babo” is cute while “baka” is actually foul. Apparently Super Junior’s Leeteuk had trouble understanding that too.
A recent episode of MBC “Come to Play” featured Super Junior’s Heechul, Leeteuk, Shindong, Donghae, Kyuhyun and the Wonder Girls as the ‘idols who promoted national prestige.’
Leeteuk confessed during the show, “When I performed in Japan, I thought I could get Japanese fans’ attention if I use Japanese when I’m singing SNSD’s ‘Gee’.”
He continued, “There was a word ‘fool’ (babo) in the lyrics, so I cutely sang ‘baka,’ but the fans’ reactions were weird. I later learned that ‘baka’ is not a cute word that we use and actually is a foul language that has all the bad meanings,” causing the audience burst into laughter.
So guys, know what you’re saying before you say it!
