Twitter has become one of the world‘s most resourceful networking sites, heavily popularized by high-profile celebrities and politicians. Local elections in South Korea saw a rise in voter turnout from a younger demographic who hit the polls after seeing “go and vote” messages online from friends and celebrities.
Around 400,000 Koreans in their 20s and 30s use Twitter and encouraged one another on June 2 to participate in their local elections by leaving motivating tweets and pictures, setting the estimated turnout of eligible voters higher than expected at 55 percent, the second highest turnout since 1995.
Hwang Young-min, coordinator at People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy says, “Twitter and other mobile devices appear to have brought more young voters to the booths”
Celebrity actors and singers had a big role in inspiring their followers as they tweeted their own voting experiences. Lee Oi-Soo, a popular Korean novelist with over 170,000 followers tweeted a picture of himself and his wife in front of a polling station with the message “I voted!”. Brown Eyed Girls’ Miryo even caught a little heat after posting a picture of herself holding up some ballots, but the message was all the same.
Social networking sites such as Twitter are said to increase in popularity, as two-thirds of internet users will be using them by 2014 (eMarketer), making them a crucial source for insight into what the public’s thoughts are on worldly issues.
