In Asia, the use of characters makes lots of words sound almost identical. You can imagine then how someone new to Korea, say NichKhun of 2PM, would get a little lost in communication.

On a special episode of Strong Heart, NichKhun shared the struggle he faced to grasp the Korean language. Having moved from Thailand, he didn’t know a lick of Korean, so during his trainee days, NichKhun memorized the phrase, “Hello, I am from Thailand.

“One day I went to the company office for the first time and I happened to see a trainee who said, ‘Hello, I am from Thailand.’ I was so happy to see that trainee.” Little did he know that the other trainee was Junsu and so not from Thailand.

In Korean, ‘Thailand’ is pronounced as ‘Tae-guk’, which sounds similar to the word ‘Daegu’, just stressed differently. NichKhun then continued, “Junsu misunderstood my bad pronunciation of ‘Thailand’ as ‘Daegu’ and was happy to see someone from his hometown, while I thought Junsu was from Thailand and was happy to see him.”

Aish, what a headache! I’ve tried learning Korean and you stress one word just a tad too hard and you’ll end up saying something completely off from what you were intending.

Has anyone been lost in a communication-mess?
