With anime fan-subbing sites on the chopping block to make way for more “legal” alternatives, it looks like manga scanlation sites may soon be next on the hit list. A new coalition is being formed between Japan’s Digital Comic Association and several American publishers to bring an end to manga scanlation sites.
For those of you that don’t know, scanlation sites are highly popular sites that scan the original Japanese manga chapters and translate the text for readers around the world to enjoy. Well, the coalition says that these sites are harmful and “now host thousands of pirated titles, earning ad revenue and/or membership dues at creators’ expense while simultaneously undermining foreign licensing opportunities and unlawfully cannibalizing legitimate sales.”
The coalition, composed of forty-two companies, is threatening to take legal action against thirty of the most popular scanlation sites in hopes of breaking the trend. Scanlation fans (including me) are devastated to heard this news. Will we soon have to start buying manga to enjoy it?
How do you feel about this situation?
