On June 30, Korean actor Park Yong-ha was discovered dead by his mother at 5:30 a.m. Police have officially ruled this as a suicide.

Wednesday afternoon, Chief investigator Kwak Jeong-hee gave a briefing, declaring Park’s death to be caused from suffocation after hanging himself with a camcorder charger cable.

Park Yong-ha, 32, was found in his room in Nonyhun-dong, southern Seoul by his mother at approximately 5:30a.m., leaving no suicide note. The night before, Park had arrived home lamenting to his father, who has been diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, saying “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I should be the one in pain, not you.”

“Based on the testimonies, we are assuming that Park committed suicide on impulse after drinking from stress over his father’s illness, his business and entertainment career,” Kwak says, as it had been known that Park Yong-ha had been struggling to handle the duties of being CEO of his own company YONA Entertainment, while pursuing musical and acting careers.

Park Yong-ha became a household name and “Hallyu Star” with 2002’s Korean drama, Winter Sonata. He also saw success with his music career, releasing several albums in Japan and winning four consecutive Japan Gold Disc Awards. His most recent works were 2008’s On Air and 2009’s Story of a Man and was recently cast in a drama remake of Hong Kong film Tian Mi Mi.

Celebrity friends have begun paying condolences at the hospital that Park Yong-ha’s body is currently located. This is a tragedy and a shock to everyone. Condolences to his family and loved ones.
