On the recent episode of MBC TV’s Hot Brothers, the show took things a little too far when BEAST’s Lee Ki Kwang underwent a ‘Don’t Get Worked Up Under Any Situation’ test. And by a little, I mean way out of line. FYI, racist humor was involved.

Kpop media outlets have apparently decided to hold off on this topic because they fear the wrath that will unfold between BEAST fans and those offended by this incident, but regardless of what people have to say, this is a subject important enough to talk about. Racist humor is no joke and this right here shows how a country very distinct from my own, still finds comedic value in stereotypes and prejudice behavior.

On the July 25 episode of MBC TV’s Hot Brothers, the cast was put under certain situations to get them worked up. In Ki Kwang’s case, he did an imaginary filming for a CF, where he painted his face to look like an African American (blackface) and ’filmed’ several takes as he embarrassingly tried to keep his composure. Watermelons were involved.

I know these boy band members and the cast are controlled by higher authorities, so I personally don’t blame Ki Kwang for this, at least not entirely. However, this is still very, very disappointing and painful to read about. This is widely televised ignorance. I mean, people are watching this on TV and it’s disturbing to know that some still find humor in racial stereotypes.

These are worldly issues right here and we have to put them out there so people understand how wrong this is. Whoever’s idea this was ought to be ashamed. As should the cast for following through.

omo. dissappointed at the script writers.


I still think it’s the producers/ writers’ fault, and Korea is a very homogenous country which isn’t used to all the black people yet, I think.
Like most Asian countries it’s pretty rare to find black people there on daily life. Thus stereotypes comes out from that, there was 2(?) years ago also a South Korean CF which let black people portray as caniballs in Africa eating human flesh and then advertising chickens^^ I can’t really blame anyone on this ;/ neither Giikwang nor the producers

Being that I am African American/Black and know the story behind what this is about...It is sad...really sad that they would go this far.  I have never been a BEAST fan so this does not affect that in any way.  I do however feel bead for Ki Kwang, for I don’t think he realized the magnitude of what he has done or was doing at the time.  I do feel that if this gets out to the wrong set of people...this will be blown out of proportion to the highest extent possible.  For all that found humor in this...they may want to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves if they are racist. AS they say “Ignorance is bliss”


i cant blame kikwang, call it ignorance or whatever, but im gonna stick to the fact that it’s the producers and directors of the show that are making racist jokes. either way, whoever’s fault it is, this won’t do well if it’s made into a bigger issue, cause it’s actually a legit issue


Wow. That is horrible. If there’s one thing I can’t tolerate in this world, it’s racism. I am disappointed in the script writers/whoever came up with this.

This is actually pretty big but I really don"t know if I were going to blame anyone.
I mean This could be an issue traced back to Korea’s history and the fat that for a long time they were an isolated country.I think if they realized how big of an issue racism is they would never have gone this far so I don"t really think it’s right to blame them because I believe they just don"t know how big of a deal it is.
This is all just my opinion and I don"t know If I said anything wrong but if i did I hope someone would correct me:)

sadly even now a days it is still not exactly rare to see such things on tv.
I don’t blame ki kwang either though. Idols do what the are told to in order to survive in the business world I guess…

I think a little bit of humour between everybody is fine because it helps us realise our differences and accept that, but sometimes it can be taken a little too far, like this case :(
I blame the show, not the whole of Korea is so. The show should not have been followed through either.

Imo it’s not racist at all nor offending, but I can see the point of some African^^


he is an idol, but he still managed to do this kind of stuff to get more laughter from viewers LOL so dedicated… I can’t wait to watch how this CF thing turned out!
