BoA, the queen of KPOP, recently released her first Korean music video in five years. The song entitled “GAME” got highly mixed reactions from fans, and somewhat of a war has broken out between fans, splitting the fandom between those that support her “new style” and those that prefer her “old style.” Keep reading to see what I have to say about this.

I am 100% on team old BoA. Why? Because old BoA looked a little something like this:

Hot beats, smooth vocals and, to top it all off, amazing dance choreography. What’s not to love about old BoA? I would stand to say that there’s nothing to hate about a song like this. And, hey, even in the videos where she didn’t dance (which were mostly ballads), BoA blew us away with her natural non-autotuned voice. My second piece of evidence is this:

Now let’s move on to talk about new BoA. From what I have gathered and seen so far, it looks like the face of new BoA is caked in makeup and dressed in extravagant costumes. Sure, that’s great for someone like Lady Gaga or Madonna, but is it really something that goes well with BoA? In my opinion, no. If you take a look at the picture at the beginning of the post, I think almost everyone would agree that the picture on the left is the most beautiful. Why? Because it shows that BoA is a true and natural beauty. Someone like BoA doesn’t need loads of makeup or outfits to stand out; she makes a statement about herself through her confidence and charisma.

I was also quite disappointed with the quality of music that the newly released song “GAME” had to offer. If you haven’t seen it yet, then check it out below:

Call it “catchy,” “new,” “hip” or whatever you want to call it, but I’m still going to always refer to music like this as “cheap” and “superficial.” What I mean by that is that ten years from now, you’re not going to be listening to this song (That’s right! I still listen to “ID; Peace B!”). Not only does BoA’s voice sound highly processed but the fact that she talk-sings her way through most of the song is an insult to her vocal talent.

I don’t know what SM Entertainment is trying to pull here, but if a song and concept like this are going to be in her title track, then they can just go and forget about getting any money from me on this new album. It’s even been said that BoA herself came up with this concept, which makes me a little more disappointed. Does she feel that she needs to change in order to keep up with all the pop music in the current industry? If she does, then I hope someone tells her that she doesn’t. No matter what time you’re in, amazing talent will always come out on top.

BoA’s sixth studio album, Hurricane Venus, is set to hit on August 2nd. I am hoping for the best.
