Although a live action Mulan was released last year in China, Disney decided to take matters into their own hands and create their own live action version of this classic Chinese tale. They even got Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha) to star in and co-produce it.

Supposedly Ziyi has already been working on the film but due to her being involved in a scandal here and there, the movie has been on a mini-hiatus.

This film has Chuck Russell’s name attached to it as the director. He is the one that directed the films The Mask and The Scorpion King. I wonder how he will fare as the director for an old Chinese tale.

Also, like every other movie being released in the U.S., Mulan is going to get the 3D treatment. I wonder if this is really necessary. Some movies aren’t even worth the extra money to see in 3D (*cough*Alice in Wonderland*cough*).

I have a feeling this live action version won’t be childish like Disney’s previously released animation of Mulan (Eddie Murphy-voiced dragon doing comic relief) nor will it be as brutal as Jingle Ma’s rendition which was released last year in China’s theaters (exploring human nature and emotion). It will probably be along the lines of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I wonder if Johnny Depp will make a surprise appearance in the film? Heh, I doubt it (although Ma’s version of Mulan did star Russian singer Vitas, which was totally random).
