The SBS weekend drama entitled Life Is Beautiful has already seen its fair share of controversy, but it looks like the kitchen is about to get hotter! Keep reading to get the details on the controversy the drama is facing this time!
Earlier this year, the drama (and a couple others) were slammed by anti-homosexuality groups for their depiction of alternative sexual preferences on public television. Well, last month Lee Sang Woo’s character proposed to his lover, portrayed by Song Chang Yi in the series. The wedding of the two has not yet been confirmed, but the prospects of the wedding being portrayed on television is unsettling to some. Even the characters themselves are showing mixed emotions about the wedding. The father of one of the characters says in an episode that, “I accept your relationship but I’m not sure about a wedding.”
An inside informer was quoted as saying that, “… it should be acknowledged as a true love between a person and a person, but it won’t be easy to broadcast a wedding scene due to the immense opposition. Already, a group against acknowledging homosexuality has put out advertisements against the idea in a conservative newspaper in early June… the fact that characters of the show seem to have different opinions on a wedding is reflecting the problem the production team is having on the issue as well. The only person that knows how this wedding issue will be taken care of is the writer Kim Soo Hyun.”
While countries like the United States seem to have more or less become “tolerant” of gay culture (in fact, the first ever gay “sex scene” on daytime television was shown earlier this year on the soap opera One Life To Live), South Korea seems to have been much more conservative about this issue in the past years. While they have made progress, there are many that still think that showing this sort of material is harmful to the public.
Do you think they should be allowed to show a homosexual wedding on television?

It is just a drama and at the same time it is a part of life and if they are against it so much put an age restriction on that episode if it is so bad to be broadcasted.
Same thoughts.

I don’t care if they do, but I don’t think Korean people would be thrilled because they tend to be anti-homosexuals >___< sigh

… Don’t make it such a big deal… It’s already a fact that gay marriage exist eventhough it could be considered taboo in other countries…
Over-react much, I think that they should go for it. i mean, the drama clearly shows what’s going on in our society today. for me, the theme is brave and realistic, I kinda like it.

i think it’s okay as long as there’s no excessive scene.. after all,, it’s just an act… but sure the time slot must be taken into consideration..

I think they should be able to show it… I think people need to become more tolerant over the issue and if you don’t want to watch it, don’t watch it. It should be there as a means to educate people, not to cause controversy.
