It was reported earlier this month that a 3D live-action version of Disney’s Mulan is currently in the early stages of production and is set to begin filming later this year in October. Famed Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi is slated to play the leading female role, and it’s been recently revealed that Taiwanese-singer Leehom Wang may be joining her side on the cast!

The movie team, led by The Mask director Charles Russel, has revealed that Leehom Wang is a favorite to play the lead male role of General Li. Having already impressed the public with his acting skills in Lust Caution, Little Big Soldier and Love In Disguise, Leehom is also fluent in English, and many believe that the U.S. audiences would receive him well.

The film was originally planned for last year, but it was put on hold due to financial problems. Zhang Ziyi, who is also producing the film, allegedly investor-hunting at the Cannes International Film Festival in May and managed to get Disney to back the film with a whopping $100 million!

Although the movie sounded a little lame at first (since Zhao Wei’s version of Mulan was already so epic), I’m beginning to warm up to it more and more. As a Leehom Wang fan, this is now a must-see for me if he is indeed starring in the film. Also, with a name like Disney backing the film, I doubt the film will be anything but a raging success among viewers of all ages. Look forward to seeing this movie soon in a theater near you!
