Recently, SHINee’s Key was invited to SBS’s Strong Heart where he revealed stories about his childhood. His grandmother was the key mother-figure in his life; after his mother fell ill soon after Key’s birth, his grandmother took on the responsibility of taking care of him, supporting and nurturing him into the kind of person he is today. In describing his grandmother, Key said “I was a bad grandson that made my grandmother worry a lot. I would also say ‘I never asked you to take care of me, so why are you going through so much trouble doing it?” He shed tears as he revealed this to the audience - he definitely regrets all the times he has told his grandmother that.

I’m sure he was in his rebel phase, and he just wanted her to stop worrying because he also said, “When I was leaving for Seoul to walk down the road to become a singer, my grandmother gave me a note and money. I could not stop crying on the train when I read her short note, telling me that she loved me.” He always carries the note with him, stating that the note gives him strength to carry on. It serves a motivation and reminder to him all that his grandmother has done for him throughout the years.

And, seems like Key’s grandmother has a relatively good theory on how to become a popular singer. Apparently, when SHINee was promoting “Juliette,” she had told Key that the song was “too hard” and that in order to be successful, they needed to come out with songs that were trendy, basically the catchy songs - songs like Super Junior’s Sorry Sorry or Son Dambi’s Saturday Night (as suggested by his grandmother. And when SHINee came out with Ring Ding Dong, his grandmother told him, “This is it.” Very true! Seeing that SHINee gained a lot of positive feedback regarding Ring Ding Dong. So what is her verdict regarding Lucifer? She says she will have to look it over more, but from what I can see - Lucifer fits into that trendy category.

Let me end on this note. Key’s grandmother should be really proud of him. He has accomplished much as a KPOP idol, and already at such a young age set a great name for himself. And aside from his many accomplishments, Key is a really sweet grandson. He really appreciates all that his grandmother has done for him.

“Your Kibum has grown up a lot, so you don’t have to worry. I will work harder and take better care of myself. I love you, grandmother, for always giving me strength.”

Such a heartwarming and touching message to his grandmother! I love Key so much more now. Kyah.

this is why i love idols going on variety shows.. they show their true personalities and how they really are.. people should watch idols on variety shows before they immediately judge them from their appearance.
