It’s time for another Korean lesson from your favorite KPOP idols! This time, I would like to focus on SHINee’s Onew and his phone call to one of the SNSD members (supposedly Sooyoung). I actually think making phone conversations is somewhat difficult for every foreign language because it’s harder to understand what people are saying on the phone. I mean…that’s the case for Japanese and myself. Watch their awkward conversation below:
When she first picked up the phone, Sooyoung said “Yeoboseyo” (여보세요), which means “Hello.” Immediately, Onew responded with “Annyeonghaseyo” (안녕하세요). Then, he introduced himself to let her know who he was: “Shainieui lideo Onewlago hapnida” (샤이니의 온유라고 합니다). It translates to “I am SHINee’s Onew.” After Sooyoung realized who he was, they started talking using impolite forms because they are friends in real life.
It was a mission for Onew to recruit celebrities for his show “Nocturnal,” so he asked her a favor by asking“Jogeum iddaga sigan genchanni?” (조금 있다가 시간 괜찮니?), which means “Are you free in a little bit?”
The rest of their conversation is about the show, so I am not going to go further. I just wanted to let you guys know about the general format of phone conversations.
I hope you guys enjoyed this lesson! Until next time. 안녕!
