Consider this part 2 of SHINee’s highly talked about interview with GQ 10men Magazine. The interview was a little less about entertainment and so much more about Jonghyun, Minho and Taemin’s honest beliefs and opinions of their career in the Korean music industry. Read on for more.
During their GQ 10men interview, lead vocalist Jonghyun talked about what he focuses on while he’s performing, “The thing I think of most importantly, and so what I concentrate on polishing the most, is emotion,” And, “I concentrated a lot on pronunciation. Not on whether the pronunciation is good or bad but on the issue of whether the pronunciation suites the song…in “Ring Ding Dong” we went down to bass, a thick sound…when we came to “Lucifer” I thought to throw that away, I wanted to lose that a bit and go with something more refreshing so I put in effort to do that…I try to explode on stage…something has to explode for it to be fun.”
Aside from explosions, he also spoke about the kind of recognition he wants to attain as a singer, SHINee’s music and how he sees the future of SHINee. “I want receive recognition from the people who say that music nowadays isn’t even music.” (And speaking about SHINee’s music) “I think when mass appeal and artistry meet the very best music comes forth, but there’s a bit of a contradiction. It’s akin to liking hook songs but criticizing them at the same time. SHINee does commercial music. It is commercial music. It means that we have to do music that people listen to…We have to make people hum along to our music.”
“They’re quite at odds with each other,” explains Jonghyun about the kind of music he wants SHINee to do, “What I want to do and what SHINee has to do. I think it would be good if we did ballads.”
During Minho’s interview, he mentioned that he has yet to like one of their singles to a full 100%, but enjoys it nonetheless. “Truthfully, minus a couple of songs you could count using just one hand (speaking about his position as lead rapper in the group), I’ve written almost all of the raps on our album. Although there are times when I think that it would be nice if people acknowledged that, at the same time they may also be very trivial parts that could easily be skipped over. I don’t think that I should go around saying that I did this, I did that, wondering why people won’t give me recognition.”
He also went on to share his experiences as a college student, the noticeable difference in lifestyles and the many areas he feels he’s lacking in, “I’ll just have to show them more. If I have the opportunity I want to try acting as well, but I don’t think I’d be good at it. Although I think I would work hard and put in a lot of effort because I know that I’m lacking. I don’t think people would go, wow, he’s good.”
And finally Taemin, who’s the youngest member, spoke about his age, “now, I really like being told that I’m cute. Truthfully you only hear those words during a certain stage. I think I have about 2 years left,” and how his members have helped him become a better singer, “Onew hyung listens to me. Rather than telling me what to do in particular, he shows me many examples. He leaves the choice up to me. The fact that he worries with me serves as a big strength to me.” Aw.
And like in any group of performers, SHINee’s competitive nature occasionally comes out, “When someone practices everyone follows and practices. And when it comes to monitoring we don’t just monitor ourselves, we study the other members as well. In the midst of that we compete to find our own styles. In this setting you can’t help but receive motivation.”
I personally found this interview highly informative of the nature of SHINee (and every other idol) behind the scenes. Interesting, no?
