Now entering into episode five of Gloomy Salad Days. Have you been following the stories? We have gone through Huang He’s (Wang Zi) and Xiao Lin’s (Zhang Jun Ming), ten remain. This week we follow Nicole’s (Lin Chen Xi) story. (Warning: Spoiler Alert!)

The episode begins with Xiao Lin and Nicole’s blog project for school, the topic: Suicide. She talks about the legendary song, Gloomy Sunday, and how it is nicknamed the suicide song. How after listening to this people feel compelled to kill themselves (this is only a legend, the song has nothing to do with people’s choices), and played it on the blog, making her classmates really freaked out. Now I first heard this song from Korean singer, Jaurim. I listened to it all the time, because it sounds so beautiful, but after hearing Nicole talk about this I actually payed more attention to the lyrics. It talks about a lover who had died, and the other dreams about returning to them, it really is quite gloomy. Through out the entire episode you hear this song being played. Below is Jaurim’s cover. Go ahead and take a listen, it really is such a beautiful sounding song.

A Cai (Zhang Jie) actually didn’t play as big of a role as I predicted last week. He appeared once to poke fun at Nicole, but that is all we see of him. Xiao Tang (Kris Shen) is the real focus. He tries to take care of Nicole by feeding her foods and at one point he goes to put her phone on silent so she doesn’t get in trouble in class, but discovers a message from one of her costumers. Seeing a location and time, Xiao Tang waits there to spy on her, when he learns about her night job. Confronting her is no good, because she really needs the money, and knows no other way.

Her father, Zeng Guo Quan, who is jobless and an alcoholic, abuses her and her mother. He promises a brand new start to their lives once he finds a job, which later he does, but he also has a gambling problem and throws away his money to loan sharks. After threatening him and Nicole, the loan sharks tell him to pay double the money by next week, so her dad steals her money. This character is played by actor Hsia Ching Ting, such an extremely different role for him! This is the guy who always plays those really silly, goofy roles on shows like K.O. One and Romantic Princess.

Nicole makes a deal with Du that she wants her father out of her life, so her and her mother can live freely. While Guo Quan is on his way to pay off the loan sharks, he runs into Xiao Ting, causing his money to go everywhere. And while he is picking it up off of the road, a bus unexpectedly goes by and hits him! He is then rushed to the hospital, along with Xiao Ting who is questioned. Where Nicole runs into Xiao Ting and asks him what happened. The car accident was only what started it, but once they began to operate, because of all the alcohol, his liver had failed him, and he couldn’t get a transplant in time.

Shocked that her wish came true, and realizing Du is real, what will Nicole do from here? Well, we can only guess because that is the end of the episode!

What are your opinions on her situation so far?
