Following the 2010 Asian Games located in Guangzhou, the disqualification of a Taiwanese taekwondo contender has led to an ‘anti-Korean’ movement in Taiwan. Specifically, there has been a rise in boycotts of Korean artists including an exclusive event which SNSD and the Wonder Girls were scheduled to perform on December the 2nd. Due to the negative response, this event has been cancelled.
The disqualification of a Taiwanese athlete during the 49 kilogram women’s taekwondo match at the Asian Games has led much discontent from Taiwanese neitizens. Yang Shu-Chuan was disqualified as a consequence of having extra sensors in her socks, which were used to determine the athlete’s record points. Prior to the event, the sensors were approved.
Although there were no Korean judges present, the final decision to disqualify Yang was made by World Taekwondo Federation Vice President Hong Seong Chun, who is Korean.
SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, the companies that SNSD and the Wonder girls are signed under, have refrained from commenting on the issue.
