The year of 2009 has brought us many great manga reads, and 2010 has been no different. There have been many different styles and story types sure to please all kinds of readers. Below are some of the best English releases of 2010.

Chi’s Sweet Home

An adorable kitten gets separated from her family, and gets adopted by a young boy and his parents. Chi the kitten soon wins the hearts of this young family, but there’s just one problem: they live in an apartment that strictly forbids pets. This lovely little series has also been adapted to mini anime clips which takes the cuteness to a whole new level!

Black Butler

Despite his youth, Ciel Phantomhive is the head of the very rich and powerful Phantomhive family. Attending to his every wish is his butler Sebastian, a cool, dark and handsome manservant. No request is too big and no crisis is too vexing for Sebastian to handle; he seems perfect — maybe too perfect?

Natsume’s Book of Friends

For as long as he can remember, Takashi has been cursed by the ability to see spirits, a power inherited from his grandmother Reiko. Upon her death, Reiko bequeaths to her grandson her Book of Friends, a book containing the names of spirits Reiko had bullied into servitude. The Book of Friends is a highly prized item in the spirit world, and spirits hound Takashi constantly.

Twin Spica

When Asumi just turned one, a deadly space shuttle accident occured. The spacecraft, “Shishigo,” crashed into Asumi’s town, killing all of its pilots and hundreds of people in the town, including Asumi’s mother. Now, even after the horrific incident that happened to the town, Asumi desires to be an astronaut, and with a little help from Lion-san, a ghost of the spaceship pilot, enters space school to make her and Lion-san’s dream come true.

Bunny Drop

Going home for his grandfather’s funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of man help Rin come out of her shell? And hang on, won’t this turn of events spell doom for Daikichi’s love life?!

And the winner of the Editor’s Choice Award for Best New Manga of the Year Goes To:
Black Butler By: Yana Toboso! With its dark humor, action, adventure, and a supernatural twist, this gothic tale will be sure to keep you turning pages and wanting more! I’ll be looking forward to watching the anime adaptation of this series once I’ve gone through all the volumes.
