So a few days ago, Alexandra Wallace, a UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles, for those of us who haven’t started the college process or are in the States) student, posted up a video of her ranting on youtube. The video is called “Asians in the Library” and is had racist comments against people of Asian descent. Why did she make this rant? Because of how they acted in the library.

Here is the video of a response to the rant, which I highly recommend watching because it’s hilarious:

Now, I definitely want to begin by telling you all (since a majority of you are either of Asian descent and/or have a culturally open-mind towards Asia in its entirety) that you should not take this girl offensively. There are many people in this world in every skin colour that are like her. Regardless, Asian peoples in general (Chinese, Taiwanese (let’s not get into this debate please), Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Bengali, Mongolian– everyone there) are a minority in the West. The bad thing is, is that Asians are usually concentrated in a few areas, easily becoming almost a “majority” of a certain area (think New York City or San Francisco). So what happens is that you do get a lot of awareness and culture-mingling in those areas, but almost nothing in the rest of the US. So do keep in mind that this girl never got exposed to Asian traditional culture (which I’d like to separate from Asian pop culture. You probably agree that there’s a bit of difference in how you look at South Korea through K-pop music versus their ancient mythology).

And you know what, that is too bad. It’s bad that she looks at “Asia” as only Chinese (notice she’s insulting Chinese people, but talk about the tsunami, which clearly hit Japan). It’s bad that she doesn’t have any more sense then that (like I’m sorry, but it is bad. Even I forget that an Indian person is an Asian person some times. I’m correcting that, because it’s not fair to the peoples who clearly have a defining ethnicity and culture in a wonderful continent.) It’s bad that she also has this old 1890s version of Asian (Chinese in this case) people.

By that I mean if you remember, roughly in that era and into the early half of the 1900s, Asian people were mainly Chinese people, who tried to escape China because of failing Qing, rise of Sun Yatsen, and subsequently, the coming of the Guomindang. So obviously, there were a lot of Chinese people who were centered in ghettos. Because how else did you feel safe in a foreign country? You stuck with your fellow people who shared the same language. (This is also the case for the Irish, Africans, Jews, and even the Germans). So a lot of stereotypes rose around these ghettos– I mean c’mon. Anyone here has been to a densely populated Asian neighborhood of 1st or 2nd generation immigrants? You understand what these “stereotypes” are.

In addition, do also keep in mind that the only reason that there weren’t and haven’t been a lot of Japanese people is not only did Japan experience a beautiful bloom known as the Meiji Period, and who would want to move out of a blooming country, but also by the 1940s, the Japanese people in America were sent to relocation camps because of WWII. (This was not repealed until the 80s under Reagan).

In essence, why I’m giving the world history lay down is that I want to point out that she has a pretty old way of looking at “Asian” people by stereotyping them as Chinese. But I also want to point out that there’s a reason why she has that outlook. I really wish she can change her outlook, but that’s not going to be just done by her, but also by us (as Asians, but also the future. Insert cheese). We’re not immigrants, and I’m certain we’re not like those Asian stereotypes.

Anyways, my opinion on her is just that. I can’t defend her, but I see where she’s coming from. I also see her as a highly typical American– blond, ignorant, and basically– stupid. How she got into ULCA is beyond me. American education is a sham, so she probably got 2200+ on her SATs and graduated from a joke of a high school that gave her a 4.0 gpa. She also probably has extracurriculars, just to make her look intelligent.

Her ignorance makes me very hard for me to say anything nice about her, but I don’t hate her for it. I completely understand why she’s complaining. I may be Chinese and live next to a Chinese ghetto, but I grew up with them along with Americans. Those Chinese stereotypes are really the worst images of both Asian and Chinese people.

Honestly, this video is just a reminder of stereotypes of both American (the way she talks) and Chinese (and Asian in general) through her dialogue. I’m all hopeful for globalization, so all I have to say is maybe, a century down the line, these type of videos don’t have to exist anymore.

Here is the original video (that someone else has uploaded):

asians are great people x

This is guy is so cool! I love is random lines! “We grow our own food”!! That racist white chick ticked me off so bad!

This guy is awesome! I cant believe she was stupid enough to post a rant like this online. Loved his seven chins comment, i shall now measure anger in chins.

I had the same reaction when she imitated somebody on the phone, i hate it when people do that (often when they intimidate kpop). He brightened my day ^^

OMG I love that guy! XD “Your car could break down in the middle of a road, we could take it apart and make it into an airplane. That’s how great we Asian people are.” XD That line totally made my day~ But god damn that girl is so rude! I’m a white, American girl myself, but I love Asians!!! And even if you do have a problem with them DON"T POST A FREAKING VIDEO OF IT ON YOUTUBE. I agree with you. She is THE typical stereotype of an unintelligent, American white girl =.=

OMG love this! soo hilarious :L
thanks for sharing!

one line completely threw me off in this article and it was “ highly typical American– blond, ignorant, and basically– stupid “ and if you dont understand why please think a little further about it. This line is basically saying all americans ( asian, african, irish, mexican ). I knnow what you’re trying to say but the line is just a little iffy to me :l.

I’m not sure if you’re going to get this, but I do realize I should’ve added more to that point.

My typical version of a(n unintelligent) American *girl* is white and valley girl. Basically the way she talks and how ignorant she is. Also I threw in the stereotype of blond in my sentence because I’m just also utilizing a stereotype to show that she herself is becoming one as well.

But I also do believe that the typical American, including all races within America, is stupid and ignorant. C’mon, just take a look at our education system and our employment statistics. (Just go look at the census bureau). No ethnicity in America is superior because we’re all a melting pot of culture. Thus, when I do mean “typical American” (though I should’ve typed “typical American girl” in my article, that I will clarify), I do mean everyone in America.

I don’t mean it to offend anyone on this site, but I come from NYC. I go to school on the Upper East Side and I grew up in the ghettos of Brooklyn. In my life time from growing up with Chinese, African American, Jewish, and Russian ghetto kids, as well as meeting the brilliant minds of tomorrow who are both Chinese and African American through various academic programs, I’ve come to realize (and you can disagree) that the hierarchy of an intelligent country is an equilateral triangle subdivded into 3 parts from the base of one side to a vertex. There are only a selected few who are the intelligent elite. However there are many who are of the intelligent middle. But ultimately, there is a larger vast majority of the uneducated mass. In all of these subdivisions, there are all ethnicities. Thus, the thrid tier (the very bottom) I consider the typical American since the “unintelligent” peoples outnumber the “intelligent”.

...I Really Hate Her
Friggin -___-
And I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Guy’s Response

yup asians are so great that they could turn a car into an airplane. that was a genius statement! 7 chins?? ahaha
this is guy is too awesome.
thanks for posting this.. it really made my day!!

This guy is SO awesome.

THis is the BEST response!

omg..that girl is really annoying!!
i like the response :D

I’m really annoyed by her...I can’t even believe that she got into UCLA!
The video response is really funny! Thanks for sharing!

lol the response was funny. i can’t believe she made a video just because of asians talking the library

before i elaborate on my thoughts about this, i want to thank you for sharing!! ^^ hmm...i watched her full “rant” first, since i didnt know about this before...*slooowness ^^;* and i can see why she’s making some of those...assumptions, since I am an asian who was born and grew up in the states. still, i think her scope of asians and their behavior is really minuscule, and grouping all asians into just “chinese” isn’t right (hellooo whered tsunami come from? o0). i see lots of asian international students at my own uni, but i’ve NEVER seen such behavior as that girl described. i have some friends, one from taiwan, and a few from here in the states, that go to UCLA (lol you typed “ULCA” in your 7th paragraph ^^) and so i cant help but feel quite offended for them. my friend from taiwan, he’s over at UCLA by himself, no relatives, has to do everything on his own. i wonder if he has watched this vid? >3< anyway, the response vid in this post cracked me up XD that guy really isnt afraid of expressing himself...and i guess on a large scale, other asians who might be affected by the girl’s rant. i, an ABC, probably am not as offended by her as some others...but still, her words make me uneasy, as it reminds me of my dad who had to come to the states by himself and go to college while making a living, with no family support. *sigh* well, there are many types of people in this world. ^^; thanks again for sharing your thoughts, esther!

Thank you. You have made my day with that video *hugs*
I can’t say that she doesn’t have a point. I mean, I’ve had that happen to me too, except it was in the computer lab. However, I didn’t consider it rude or anything; I could still concentrate on my work. What Wallace showed is merely her bigotry and ignorance. Also her lack of concentration because I can concentrate on my essay when there’s a party going on in the room next to mine let alone one person talking in the library.

For all the haters out there, please don’t. You have to understand that she’s probably never experienced a diverse world and have trouble differentiating between the different races/countries, as unimaginable as that sounds. Also, she did say that she’s gotten used to “all the Asians coming in to the dorms on weekends” and later apologized publicly.

At least we all know this is wrong and shouldn’t be announced in public. I’m glad too see everyone stand up and defend the Asians. ^_^

Hahaha the video response got me cracking up.

asian guy ftw the response is totally hilarious.
the girl annoys me so much.

LOL the asian guy is hilarious xD Yeah, people should be quiet in the library but you can’t just make a racist comment like that :/ And how she involved the tsunami, just really annoyed me so much ><”

I graduated from UCLA and let me tell you - I’m a bit ashamed that she goes to UCLA. (I was going to post more later.) The first time watching it, I was offended. The second time I watched it (and the subsequent times after), I laughed to everything except the tsunami bit. But use more common sense if you post a rant online. The power of the Interwebz, people.
