The double calamity of earthquakes and tsunamis to hit Japan last week weighs heavy on the hearts of many people throughout the world. The lost of lives is in excess of 10,000. The number of homeless, hungry, and helpless will surely exceed that by orders of magnitude. The situation cannot be more dire and the need to donate time, resources, and money cannot be more great. Most of us do not have the luxury of volunteering our time nor have resources to provide. However, many of us should be able to make small donations to the many charities that have a presence in Japan. One in particular I would like you to be aware of is MercyCorps. If you make a donation to them, we will send you a free Ningin t-shirt as a thank you for your charity.

There are many charities out there in which you can donate your money: the Red Cross, World Vision, Save the Children, and so on. I’ve personally mentioned MercyCorps because I have a relationship with them as we’ve worked together in past charity events such as the Rebuilding the Bridge event for the Sichuan earthquake in the summer of 2008. More importantly, MercyCorps has a very low 12% overhead. Meaning, 88% of the money we donate makes it to the victims. For other non-profits, the overhead can be as high as 60% or that only 40% of the money you donate makes it to the victims.

I’ve added the Donate to Japan graphic on the Ningin homepage.

Clicking on it will take you to a special donation page. You can simply use your credit card to make a donation. All the paid staff here at Ningin have already made personal donations. You are of course free to donate as much or as little as you can. If you’re unsure about the amount, then may I suggest $25.

After you donate, you will recieve an email confirmation thanking you for the donation. Forward that email to “japan-@-mixrmedia.com” along with your home address. (remove the dashes) The first 100 people to do so will get a Ningin t-shirt sent to them in a month or so. We have the following sizes and fits: M, XL; short sleeved, ladies’ short sleeve. Please specify the size and fit that you would like. We’ll try our best to accomodate you.

Note that we have only 100 in total, so it will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Many Ningin users have emailed asking if we could do some sort of charity drive or event to raise funds to help Japan. It’s certainly a possibility that we’re exploring. Ideas on what we, as a community, could do would be gladly accepted.

I really want to donate but I don’t have a credit card or paypal or anything raspberry

The only other way I know to donate to Japan is through Red Cross but I’m a little scared cos of something I read on tumblr about Red Cross x.x

They do take Paypal, and Google Checkout, and Amazon payments:

It’s fine if you can’t do this. You’re not obligated to.

I need to get my pay check so I can do this. I’m hoping. Its for a great cause. Thanks for doing this.

I dont have a credit car D:

If they accepted paypal, I’d donate.
