You are conveniently clicking through KPop news articles when all of a sudden you come across, “(insert favorite idol’s name here) gets injured by a flying fan sign!” After reading the second part, you could have thought of Super Junior’s Heechul and his incident in Shanghai. Some fans really are “over-the-top!” As we have heard about all sorts of stories like this, I’ve come up with a list of ten circumstances where fans (not antis) have gone a bit overboard in their obsessions with KPop idols.

1. Heechul is hit by a fan sign in Shanghai

The after-effects of this incident dragged on for a while, as a celebrity was actually harmed in this case. Earlier on March 5th this year, our beloved Cinderella Heenim was hurt by an LED board (ouch) during Super Junior’s Super Show 3 in Shanghai. According to various fan accounts, an over-excited fan carelessly threw a fan-sign at Heechul’s face and hitting him while he was singing close to the crowd and right when he tossed out a pillow, as you could see in the fancam above. Heechul could not continue performing, and walked off stage holding his face. The idol forgave her though he received a scratch under his eye, but many people got mad and upset over this, saying many mean things about the girl because he was hurt, after all, and could not appear publicly for a bit. It was said that the distressed fan bravely wrote a letter of apology and posted it online. After things were thought to be cooled down, the Twitter King tweeted something which shocked fans, proving that he was NOT okay, even if he had been trying to keep cool about the injury. This could have heated up more flames for ELFs who held a grudge against the girl already. Well, no more news about this now, and Heechul’s injury is healed. I hope this taught fans a huge lesson about throwing items (any item) at celebrities on stage, and just chucking things at people in general. (Of course, there were also those SuJu car accidents…)

WARNING: If you cannot handle reading about extremely gross things, please skip this next one and go on to number three in this list.

2. 2PM’s Ok Taecyeon receives a bloody letter from fan

Out of all those bloody letters written to idols thus far, this has got to be one of the most disturbing (and disgusting) ones known to the public. Yup, I was in the middle of eating when I brought up an article about it on the screen and I immediately lost all of my appetite. Back in November of 2009, there was a fan letter written to Taecyeon and posted on the web, but not one in pink ink and decorated with cutesy stickers and drawings. Instead, this particular fangirl used blood from her own period *gags* and then sprinkled it with pubic hair.

She wrote:
I dedicate to Taecyeon my period blood letter
Ok Taecyeon, You cannot live without me
Sprinkled with a few strands of my pubes

She also included a picture of bloody…um, I think they are panties…to prove that her letter was “genuine.” I shall not be including that picture in this post. Many netizens went and hounded down this girl and found her out. In response to their outrage, she then posted, “I am sorry. I apologize for bothering Taecyeon as well as his fans. I didn’t know it would get this big. I am not a SahSaeng fan, but just an obsessive girl.” Um, I don’t think Hottests were very accepting of her apology at all, just saying. She then threatened to file a lawsuit against them after continuous hateful comments were said on her minihompy. Girl, you set yourself up for this.

Later, a fan, who I think wanted to make light of the whole bloody letter situations, posted this in honor of Jay Park.

3. Super Junior event at Shanghai Expo runs out of tickets and mob goes crazy, a death rumored

Is it just me, or are there quite a bit of crazy acts of fandom just for SuJu…especially in Shanghai? Well, about a year ago in May 2010, Super Junior was scheduled to perform at the Shanghai Expo in China. On the morning of the exciting event, several thousand people were lined up, ready to purchase tickets, when…OH NOES! They ran out of all 5000 tickets! (Half had been reserved for Korean groups travelling to China for this show, without the knowledge of the Chinese KPop fans beforehand.) The crowds of people turned into savage animals (metaphorically) and security tried their best to keep things under control. Their attempts were not effective enough to keep everyone safe, as many people got injured and it was rumored that a girl was pushed against a second-floor railing which broke, sending her falling down to the ground, ending in a death. Some sources stated this as a fact, some said it was a rumor. Due to all of the chaos, the concert was canceled. For more on this story and a translation of the Cantonese-spoken news clip, go here, since I don’t want to risk butchering it.

4. Fanboy gets too excited and almost drags SNSD’s Taeyeon off stage during a performance

On April 17th, SNSD performed at the “Angel Price Music Festival” hosted by the Lotte World ice rink. The highlight was not the girls’ performance; rather, all attention shifted to a male college student fanboy who apparently got too excited, couldn’t hold back the urge to go onto the stage during “Run Devil Run,” (he seemed to have walked up there in a calm manner…) and tried to take Taeyeon away. I wonder why security had such a slow response to this. Well, Sunny helped get her back, yay! Not long after this incident, Wheesung had an assailant (anti?) physically try to attack him during a live performance. Dude, security, you need to get your act together! I’m glad no one was hurt in either of these situations, but extra precautions need to be taken for the future, definitely.

5. Die-hard Hottest screams her love for 2PM at Synnara fan-signing event

I remember watching this when it was circulating through KPop news portal sites back in October 2010, and I could not stop laughing. The girl, Jihyun, as she kept screaming her name to her oppas, had so much energy while screaming her love for pretty much all the 2PM members she could and holding their hands. At first, when she walked up to the table, she seemed like any normal shy fangirl. Then BAM! “OPPA!!” Poor Taecyeon had the scare of his life; he looked so frightened, and all he could say while she rambled off loudly about how much she liked him was “Yes, yes” repeatedly. Did you see his face when she scooted herself over to Junsu next? Anyway, with Junsu, he was just doing his usual fanservice for the girl keeping a calm look and attitude. Woohyung was amused already and held a mic next to Jihyun, saying “Annyeongseyo” while she was telling Junsu she was his dream girl. When it came to Woohyung’s turn, he had this “laughing smile” on his face, and even said he liked her too when she asked him to say something to him. At this point, you can tell her voice is getting a bit tired. Nichkhun was anticipating his turn very much, as you could see his interested and humored expression. He decided to be funny (and nice?) and asked if her throat was hurting after all the screaming. She said she likes doing it like that. Ok, so she likes to scream and hurt her vocal chords. I guess, for her, it’s worth it for 2PM. Junho shouted an “Oppa!” right back at her. For maknae Chansung, she was the most normal. All in all, she talks so fast and she will definitely not be forgotten by 2PM and Hottests, whether in a humorous way or a scary way.

6. Two American fans drop blood on letters for Big Bang’s G-Dragon and Taeyang

American fans this time. In December 2009, two letters were uploaded onto Twitter, with pictures of where they got the blood from. The first fan cut her neck and palm for Taeyang, the second fan cut her neck and wrist for G-Dragon. Um, they desperately wanted attention for sure, but did they think about what kind of attention they would be getting? Did G-Dragon and Taeyang even end up knowing about these messages? They might of heard of them but I think they’d be rather disgusted than flattered.

7. A crazy fan challenges Taecyeon bloody letter and expresses her love for MBLAQ’s Lee Joon

Yet another bloody fan letter from December 2009, and this one was in response to the Taecyeon one from before. Someone decided to challenge the previous fan and express her love for MBLAQ’s Lee Joon at the same time by cutting her wrist to write out a bloody letter.

This is what she wrote to accompany the posted letter online:
“ㅋㅋ What up with Ok Taecyeon period letter? If you’re gonna do one, at least do it right ㅋㅋ How dirty. Period blood? Act your age ㅜㅜㅋ Don’t do that, but do it right. Do it right. Copying that ajumma who wrote that period letter”

The letter said:
“Lee Chang Sun (real name) don’t forget me, you are everything to me. I love you. Remember that. Soojin”

I have nothing further to say.

8. Love declaration for Lee Hongki by means of bloody handwriting

Following Taecyeon and Lee Joon’s bloody love declaration letters, who was the next idol? Lee Hongki of FT Island. A fan literally cut her finger and wrote with it on paper while it was bleeding. She wrote: “Lee Honki, you know that I love you right?“ and posted a photo of her creation on the web. Uh, if he ever did see that, I bet he would answer no. Did this fan just want short time fame, or was she really “heartsick” in an extreme way?

9. Fan with mask scares Park Jungmin half to death at Synnara fansign event

Another Synnara fansign event! This happened earlier in February this year, during a fansign meet for SS501’s Park Jungmin not long after his first solo single release of “Not Alone.” Rather than with words, a fan disguised herself with a horrendous mask I am guessing, since it gave Jungmin such a fright when she ran up to him. After he got over the unexpected shock, he refused to sign her copy of the album, but Jungmin is too nice, so he ended up granting her request. You can see a very short glimpse of the mask at the end of the clip.

10. Super Junior’s Kyuhyun receives a call from an ELF in his hotel room!

Let’s end this list with a happier one, shall we? While Super Junior was in Shanghai for Super Show 3, Kyuhyun was probably really tired when “RIIIIING” the phone in his hotel room went off. He groggily goes over and picks it up. Thus, a conversation with an ELF who somehow managed to get a hold of the number began. The girl probably had a friend coaching her on what to say as she spoke to Kyuhyun. The evil maknae was very kind to her, though he did try to trick the fan at first by saying he was Changmin. In response, the girl then said she was Yunho. They had a little chat afterward. The short call ended in Kyuhyun saying a personal goodnight to her. Sadly, the youtube video for this has been marked private, so I could only provide you with a summary based off of what I remember.

Wow. Many crazy acts by fans out there, though some might be (on the edge of) insane. Of course, I could not include every single incident in the whole history of KPop, but let’s just say that I learned that things can get way out of hand to extremities just for the sake of celebrities, sometimes even getting the idols hurt.

The question is: where will you, as an individual, draw the line for fandom?
