Koyote’s Kim Jongmin recently started his solo career and released his first single, “Oppa, Stay Strong.” What’s so special about this particular track? Truth to be told, I mostly anticipated it because of Dalmatian’s Day Day when I found out he was given the opportunity to be the rapper. Sorry Jongmin, my knowledge of the older Korean singers aren’t that great but I’m getting better!
Here’s the track (cringes at clown face):
Prior to “Oppa, Stay Strong,” I had never heard any Koyote songs; I only acknowledged their group name and the fact that they exist. (Yes, I know I’m pathetic.) The teaser for Jongmin’s single scared me a bit, as I dislike clowns, but the music sounded nice. I was torn in between two decisions. Should I watch the music video when it comes out…or not? Well, turns out the MV itself had absolutely NOTHING to do with clowns. A little misleading…but at least I wouldn’t have to stare at half a clown’s face for 3+ minutes.
“Oppa, Stay Strong” had a circus-like instrumental from the beginning, contrary to the vibes of sadness from the teaser. Right away, I randomly imagined myself at the carnival eating cotton candy. Then, the rapping. Ah, Day Day is amazing. Jongmin has a really nice voice, I discovered. Somewhat olden Korean trot-like sounding tune, mixed with continuous haunting faint carnival music in the background, an interesting combination. Very fun number to listen to. Did I hear a “Cha cha cha?” Sorry if my ears failed me and that is NOT what they said. I liked the emotion in Jongmin’s voice. Also, the lady who accompanied him (I do not know who she is) added a nice extra touch to the vocals. Some fans think she is Shinji. Overall, I rate this song a 4 out of 5, and I’m looking forward to more of Jongmin’s songs!
