The Daily Rant is a new feature where I will speak freely without bias (actually, not sure if that is possible in a rant) and honestly about issues in the Asian entertainment world. Today’s Daily Rant is: plastic surgery.

It’s no secret that in today’s world, especially the entertainment industry, more and more stars are increasingly receiving plastic surgery for unwanted “flaws” in order to make themselves prettier. Let me be frank: I am no fan of plastic surgery, nor will I ever be. But then again, who am I to say that of those who get plastic surgery?

There have been quite a few KPOP artists who have admitted to receiving plastic surgery; one of those artists is outspoken Kwanghee of ZE:A, who is not abashed about this subject. He talks freely about it and is so good-natured about it that he doesn’t get much criticism for it. But other artists have not been so fortunate.

Let’s face it: people are naturally jealous. So when we ordinary people see someone so beautiful that we automatically think it cannot be possible. After all, can someone really be that beautiful and be natural at the same time? Many of our favorite idols (namely the female idols) have been accused of getting some form of plastic surgery and to be frank, most of those idols have never gotten plastic surgery. SNSD’s kid leader, Taeyeon, has had to fight off rumors that she got plastic surgery done. No matter what she says, netizens still believe that she’s gotten a little bit. Both IU and 4minute’s Nam Ji Hyun have denied plastic surgery (which I agree with them - seen their childhood pictures and they look the same). And then you have the female idols who have admitted that they have gotten plastic surgery. Goo Hara, UEE, Solbi have admitted to plastic surgery, but it was only minor. Still, to netizens, plastic surgery is plastic surgery. And they will harp and harp on idols, even if those idols have never had plastic surgery.

I don’t get why netizens are so “omg so-and-so got plastic surgery!” (To be fair, I’ve had those thoughts myself.) After all, I prize natural beauty above all others. But I’ve always known that these decisions are not mine to be made, but by other individuals. KPOP idols (and other idols) should live their lives however they want. If getting plastic surgery to be more beautiful is something that will make them happy, then by all means, they should get it. Netizens don’t have the right to criticize when idols do in fact get plastic surgery.

So what if idols get plastic surgery? In fact, I remember reading somewhere that Korea’s not even the top country where the most people get surgery. The only reason why it makes such big news is because it’s mostly done to the face. That and like I mentioned before, netizens can’t stand it when other people are more beautiful than they are. Oh netizens, it’s as if you got a pony for your birthday and one of your best friends gets a whistle and that whistle makes said friend so happy that you’re jealous. Beware, you might be featured in one of my daily rants soon.

That said, while I may not agree with plastic surgery, I have no right to tell idols otherwise. But netizens, stop making it such a big deal! Besides, some of those idols you accused were so young still that they lost their baby fat as they grew older. Honestly.

i don’t see why there’s such a big deal. even though i do believe in natural beauty, if they say they haven’t, i’ll believe it till the idols themselves reveal it.

still honestly, I don’t agree with plastic surgery. just days ago, I saw this little 12 year old korean girl featured on news.. why? she was featured? because she’s going to get an eyelid surgery at such a young age. :( oh and her mother even supported her with that decision. the kid said that she’s not confident with her asian eyes.. it sucks that people think the way to be ‘beautiful’ is to be like others and to get plastic surgery.

I don’t see what the deal is with plastic surgery lol
so much of my friends don’t like Korean idols cause they think they all had surgery ><
I don’t care about the idols looks, I just care about their personality ^___^

(I apologize for my egregious typo of Taeyang instead of Taeyeon. haha. Oops. :( Sorry! Their names are somewhat too similar in my mind)

i love kwanghee still even if he got plastic surgery
i mean the an idol who has gotten plastic surgery doesnt mean that we have to like him or her less.
they should stop making a big deal about plastic surgery, i mean its the person’s business no theirs

i didn’t know Taeyang was in Soshi LOOL! ♥

I have to say that Solbi’s surgery was not minor.
I am definitely not like a netizen, but I don’t agree with plastic surgery either. I’ve become more like you and decided it’s not my say about who and who and so-and-so. I care about plastic surgery on idols because they are, in fact, idols. I am finding South Korea more and more superficial.
I worry about the consequences of plastic surgery. It slowly progresses. You can become a star, if you are pretty. If you have the money, you can become pretty. If you want to be a star, you have to be pretty. I’m so distressed over what happened to Dan Ji. I remember watching an episode of Intimate Note and no guy wanted to be with her. Everyone thought she was ugly, and later she completely transformed her everything. She lost her sexy curves too! She had a smoking body, but she had everything done. I understand that it was for her career, but the fact that it was is very sad. She couldn’t expand to other acting roles (or possibly land acting roles) with her “old” face.
People can do what they please, but when it gets to the point that everything depends on their face or body, that’s where I have a problem.

I have to agree.  Netizens should just stop making a big deal of it.  Some idols did it while some didn’t.  Even though I don’t really agree with plastic surgery, I think that it’s okay for idols to get it.  If it makes them feel better about themselves, then I am fine.  I just don’t want them to go overboard.  Netizens shouldn’t have those who have plastic surgery.  They should just leave that topic off.  I know a lot of people who got plastic surgery.  Netizens are just making a big deal of out the idols because they are celebrities.  They shouldn’t judge people base on their looks but rather their personality.  =D

sigh… plastic surgery. i get what you mean. -______-
i guess i’m okay with it in a general sense. i mean kwanghee. as much as i think he would have still looked beautiful without the surgery, it’s not like i hate him for doing it. he’s funny and awesomely weird. that’s the thing… your looks don’t define who you are. even though i’m ok with it, i still think its better to pull off natural beauty :3 haha, basically i agree with you 100%! ^^

snsd’s kid leader, taeyang? haha but anyways, it’s none of netizens’ business.. but you know them.. they’re still gonna say what’s on their mind.. i don’t really mind if they get it or not cause i only care about the inside, their personality.

I agree with you..^^

hehe taeyang as leader of snsd *gets hilarious image in head* XD i agree with you! i dont agree with plastic surgery either, but we shouldnt hate on those who have gone through the process~ thank you for sharing!! smile

Um. First thing, you accidentally mistook “Taeyeon” and wrote “Taeyang” instead. :]

Anyway. I agree with you. I actually also don’t like plastic surgery in general but I also don’t like it when netizens bash idols for getting their faces done. Not exactly wanting to be a hypocrite but I guess it’s just because I think therein lies the difference: I don’t like plastic surgery but at least I don’t bash idols. It’s like I just let it be. After all, what’s done is done; it’s not like bashing them would make them undo what has been done to them.

And yeah, it’s their [or the company’s] choice actually. And if it makes them feel better about themselves and makes them more self-confident, who are we to stop them, right?

Its okay to have plastic surgery!

ty for sharing!
plastic surgery really is a big topic amongst kpop idols~
btw, snsd’s adorkable~ leader is taeyeon (u have typo lol)
