We thought we had seen it all last year when rookie girl groups dominated the music scene. But think again - Korea’s music scene will be inundated by a second wave of girl groups preparing to make their debut in the second half of 2011.
Because of the numerous number of girl groups out there right now, those who have yet to debut have begun sticking name tags on themselves while they greet their sunbaes. This method is to hopefully gain attention so that more people know their names when they debut. Studies show that 10 girl groups debuted in the first half of 2011 alone (so far) and another astounding 12 girl groups in addition to 5 boy groups will be making their way onto the music scene.
What’s the reason behind the many girl groups we see? Well, for starters, they have more appeal. They can cater to both female and male fans, while only boy groups can really mainly cater to female fans. Girl groups also have more images that they can use as concepts compared to boy groups.
Thanks to this trend, even dramas and movies are starting to portray this. T-ara’s Eunjung will take part in horror film “White”, in which she plays a role in a leading fictional girl group. “White” will revolve around jealousies and ambitions that girl groups have.
More girl groups? Well, at least we now know what’s contributing to this trend. I wonder which good girl groups will debut.
