Not even Kim Yuna’s fame or DBSK’s Yunho’s ‘moonwalk on ice’ can help Kiss & Cry raise ratings. After receiving an average viewer rating of 10.5% for the first episode, the second episode only managed a weak 8.1% and ranked last amongst all Sunday night shows.
It’s no secret that SBS has been struggling in the Sunday evening shows department and had banked on Kim Yuna to increase its ratings. It even took down an entire studio building to accommodate for a temporary ice skating rink at half the cost of a normal ice skating rink.
However, a critic said that the show isn’t all that exciting and that ice skating isn’t really a sport that the general public enjoys (unless it’s the Olympics) and with 10 idols paired up with 10 pro skaters, it can be boring. I wonder how Dancing with the Stars would do in South Korea.
The first episode criticism seemed to focus on IU and her “lack of interest” (really? I thought it was more the fact that her performance wasn’t as good as people wanted it to be) during her performance. The second episode for twenty minutes recapped the first episode, much to the ire of the audience members.
The producer of “Kiss & Cry”, though, has high hopes for the show, saying that viewers will be more interested once they hear stories of the professional skaters.
I don’t know about you, but figure skating isn’t as easy as it looks. For these 10 idols to learn figure skating for the first time, it’s impressive. Maybe they just need IU and Kim Yuna to sing that theme song already.
