Some of the most well known KPop stars are the ones who go by their stage names. These names are unique and memorable so that anyone would be able to point out who the idol is just by their specially adopted name. Of course family members, close friends and group mates might call them by their given name, but according to the public and the dear fans, the stage name is what sticks and identifies the idol. Let’s take a look at some of them!
Stage name: Leeteuk
Real name: Park Jung Su
Group: Super Junior
Leeteuk himself had explained why he uses his stage name with a reason similar to many other artists. He didn’t want to be confused with veteran actress Park Jeong-su. Thus, Leeteuk “special” was born! Personally, I like his real name AND Leeteuk, but Leeteuk a little more. Jung Su sounds cute and all, but Leeteuk is indeed more unique and can be turned into “Teukie” which sounds completely adorable. Other Super Junior members who use stage names include Eunhyuk (Lee Hyuk Jae), Shindong (Shin Dong Hee), and Yesung (Kim Jong Woon).
Stage Name: Lee Joon
Real Name: Lee Chang Sun
Lee Joon totally took on a whole other full name for a stage name. Hmm… to me, Lee Joon sounds more appealing. Also, it made way for this little joke: “Lee Jon-sii lovely!” As for the other MBLAQ members, G.O (Jung Byung Hee), Cheondong (Park Sang Hyun) and Mir (Bang Cheol Yong) also use stage names. Looks like Leadja Seungho is the only one who stuck with his birth name here!
Stage Name: Sunny
Real Name: Lee Soon Kyu
Cute SNSD member Sunny’s stage name sounds like a play-off from her real one. For a 9 member group, they need names so they can stand out as an individual and also so fans can remember them easier. Sunny is simple yet can stick to the mind. Seohyun switches the parts of her full name around, Seo Joo Hyun, to make her stage name. Jessica and Tiffany (Stephanie) go by there English birth names, so it’s different.
Stage Name: Baro
Real Name: Cha Sun Woo
B1A4 is still a rookie group, but they have been gaining so much attention. I hear a lot about Baro the rapper and how cute his stage name is. I like “Baro” for the same reason. It is also shorter and looks more attractive of a name than his real one. CNU does a little spin-off from his name Shin Dong Woo while Sandeul (Lee Jung Hwan) does the same as Baro.
Stage Name: (Bi) Rain
Real Name: Jung Ji Hoon
To be honest, when I first heard about Rain, my reaction was, “What kind of name is that?!” Well, of course now I think that it is totally awesome and unique. Ji Hoon sounds nice too, but Rain is just daebak! Two other male soloists who have chosen stage names for themselves are Se7en (Choi Dong Wook) and Kangta (Ahn Chil Hyun).
Stage Name: G.NA
Real Name: Choi Ji Na (Gina Choi)
I guess Gina wanted a more exciting and less common name. G.NA is the way to go (another derived from real name?)! Yup, if someone were to know about KPop and mention G.NA, there’s only one person they could be talking about. One of a kind. Two other female soloists who use a stage name are IU (Lee Ji Eun) and Zia (Park Ji Hye).
Stage Name: Key
Real Name: Kim Ki Bum
Key is a signature name. Almighty Key, Umma Key, these titles would not exist if he had used his real name. Might I say, it is also really common. Too common. There’s a Kibum from Super Junior, one who was in U-Kiss, and more I can’t think off the top of my head at the moment. Love the name “Key.” His Lockets do too! Oh, and Onew (Lee Jinki) also uses a stage name. Love Leader Dobu~
Stage Name: L. Joe
Real Name: Lee Byung Hun
Group: Teen Top
Because L. Joe is that epic of a name. Sounds more unique than Byung Hun, no? He isn’t the only Teen Top member either. There’s Chunji (Lee Chan Hee), C.A.P (Bang Min Soo), Niel (Ahn Daniel), Ricky (Yoo Chang Hyun), and ChangJo (Choi Jong Hyun). I just listed all of them, didn’t I. They all have “secret mission code-ish” names, but are easy to remember!
Stage Name: CL
Real Name: Lee Chae Rin
Niiice, she took the initials of her first and last name to form the now very well-known “CL.” Totally fits the group’s image and name’s structure too. Dara (Park Sandara) goes by her nickname, and Minzy (Gong Min Ji) jazzes up her stage name from her given one.
Stage Name: G-Dragon
Real Name: Kwon Ji Yong
Group: Big Bang
G-Dragon. Cannot imagine his name being any other one than that. Sounds much more powerful and cool than Ji Yong, which sounds like a flower boy name…? Well, maybe not that, but it definitely is softer and less “Big Bang”-ish. Fellow group mates T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyun), Taeyang (Dong Youngbae) and maknae Seungri (Lee Seung-hyun) also use a stage name. Daesung kept it real.
Of course, there are many more idols who have picked up stage names. If I were to write a little something about all of them…I don’t even want to imagine how long it would take. Also, if these idols did not go by a stage name, rather, by their real name, my mind would explode having to remember all of them. Thank you, creativity.
Do you have any favorite idols who go by a stage name? Do you like it or prefer their real name?
