Back in October of 2010, fans were hit with shocking news when it was confirmed that SHINee’s Jonghyun and actress Shin Se Kyung were a couple. Although the two have broken up, the news came as a surprise to many as young idols dating is considered a taboo in the Korean showbiz. However, just recently, another young idol couple has emerged in the industry. On June 27th, it was confirmed that BEAST’s Junhyung and KARA’s Hara are currently dating. This makes one wonder, will more idols open up about their relationships in the future?
As far as we know, there may be many more idols who are dating but are keeping it a secret out of fear of losing their fans or wanting to protect their significant other. However, Jonghyun’s relationship proved that fans are willing to support and let go of their fantasies if that means their favorite idols can be happy. The fact that more idols are coming out about their relationships is something we should all celebrate. As a fan of KPOP, I actually pity Korean idols because they can’t go anywhere during the little free time they have without being stalked by crazy obsessive fans. Just imagine having fans waiting outside your house to break into your house when you leave to steal your underwear, and on top of that, not being allowed to publicly date someone you have feelings for. As much as I would love to be an idol and be around my favorite idol groups, I don’t think I would last a day without going crazy.
Some of you are probably thinking, “You must not be a fan of either SHINee or BEAST, which is why you’re happy they’re dating.” You’re right, I may not be a huge fan of either groups, but I am a dedicated fan of TVXQ and JYJ (or DB5K) and I can honestly say I would be one of the happiest people if they found themselves a girlfriend. Maybe then will they stop tweeting pictures of their cats all day long, (Yes, I’m talking about you Cat Lady 1, and Cat Lady 2) or playing games on their iPad.
Hopefully, fans will learn to accept their favorite idols’ relationships so that more idols’ will open up about their relationships. It seems like this may be possible because as I was reading comments regarding Junhyung’s and Hara’s relationship, almost everyone was congratulating the couple. As fans, if we really love these idols, we should allow them to live their lives like the young adults they are.
