Heartstrings Episode 1: Highlights and Thoughts

The newly awaited drama Heartstrings features Jung Yonghwa, Park Shin Hye and others such as Kang Minhyuk. The drama is based in an art university and shows the lives of the teens who will do anything to fulfill their dreams. Most of the cast are actually from FNC Entertainment (Yonghwa, Minhyuk and the other Stupid band members) so of course there is a high standard for the musical talent in this drama already. In the drama, Lee Kyu Won (who is played by Park Shin Hye) is a tough and lively girl as well as being highly talented in playing the gayageum she is living up to her dream of being a musician, since her grandfather whom she is living with is one of the greatest musicians in Korea. Lee Shin (played by Jung Yonghwa) is the lead singer of the band Stupid and is a popular man with the ladies, however he is cold and only cares for music. He has a love interest in a dance Professor named Jung Yoon Soo (played by So Yi Hyun) , Already in the first episode I saw how cold he was towards girls saying he didn’t like ugly girls and being slapped round the face by someone who likes him. He contrasts really well against Minhyuk too who is dopey and extremely cute. Oh Wonbin (the former F.T Island member) also makes an appearance as one of the band members however he has hardly any lines.

In episode one, the action hits off straight away. Shin Hye and Yonghwa have worked together before on the set of You’re Beautiful so their on-screen relationship stands out really well. Already we can see the characteristics of each character. There is also hints of comedy growing too with the character Yeo Joon Hee (Kang Minhyuk) who calls older girls ‘Unnie’ and is a complete lover of food. The first episode didn’t keep things hidden though, it hooks you to the characters and you will fall in love with them since they are so well formed. Joon Hee finds a girl within the University while he is hunting for fried chicken, and he believes he’s head over heels in love with this girl and names her “Natasha”. There is a comic scene between the Stupid band members when Joon Hee tells them about her, Shin thinking he was talking about Narsha.

Kyu Won prepares a music concert at a local bar and all the Stupid fans are hyped up about the boys performing, however Shin is unable to attend due to Jung Yoon Soo being admitted into hospital meaning Kyu Won sings instead of him, causing the fans to become angry and ask for a refund. Kyu Won is really angry and upset, also hearing the news that her Professor passed away, and also she is angry with Shin for not turning up or contacting her and he has to deal with it himself offering her money. Shin gets a nasty shock when Kyu Won bites back and tells him how cocky and rude he is, obviously we can already see the love-hate relationship forming between the two of them, but I’m hoping theres a love triangle involved.

In the teaser for the second episode it seems that Shin and Kyu Won are making a deal, if Kyu Won looses she will have to be Shin’s slave for a month, I’m predicting that she will be his slave and that is where the love will bloom. It’s a good first episode and anyone who loved You’re Beautiful will love this drama too, Yonghwa gives off such a cold attitude which is a shock from what we last saw of him as Shin Woo. Park Shin Hye also shows off her musical talents with her amazing singing voice!
