The Ningin Round Table is a feature in which we pose an Asian entertainment news-related question to Ningin writers and they give us their colorful opinions and thoughts on the matter. Given a recent blog post on Korean drama millionaire bad boys, we recently asked our writers, “Which Korean drama millionaire bad boy would you want to date?” Here’s what some of them had to say:
Elizabeth Wang: Coffee Prince’s Hankyul has lived off his grandmother’s fortunes and never failed to indulge in pleasures. He has rash behaviour and often tortured the poor female lead. Despite his despicable moments, I could pick out a few desirable traits in a boyfriend. Ambition is a critical drive everyone needs in their lives; A man with a goal is extremely desirable. Although he used to freeload, he later pursues the ambition to expand the successful, charming coffee shop he revived. Now, the main reason that I swooned for Hankyul is he fell in love with EunChan even though he thought she was a guy! I believe that many men are polite and courteous, but a true gentleman tucks his ego away for love. Poor Hankyul struggled with his budding love for “him.” Many South Koreans think homosexuality is a mental disorder, but he bit back his pride, braced for his family’s criticisms, and gathered the courage to confess his love for “him.” The best part: Hankyul respects her as an equal. He watched as EunChan left to pursue her own interests and career in Italy and remained devoted to her for two years. His love is strong and true, but not restricting.
Jessica Ng: You might have heard something along the lines of this before: Someone who leaves a poor first impression could have a heart inside that wins you over a thousand times. Such is the case with Lee Seung Gi’s character Hoon in “Shining Inheritance.” Okay, so he holds the typical spoiled-rich-brat-who-is-a-successor-of-a wealthy-company position, but once you gain his trust (even if only a little) and see what is under that tough and rebellious act, you come to realize that he is actually very delicate and misunderstood; you then want to help him with his troubles and fall for him in the process. If you don’t find him attractive at first (I’m guilty), he starts to look handsome in your eyes as you get to know him more. There is a shy and adorable side to this millionaire bad boy, and wouldn’t it be the sweetest thing if you could be the one to open his heart and change him? I sure would love to take a shot at dating this guy, though it definitely wouldn’t be easy!
Vy Huynh: As one of the first millionaire bad boys I knew from my Korean drama-watching, Goo Joon Pyo from Boys Before Flowers would be the one out of them all that I’d want to date. Starting off only as the snide and egotistical leader of F4, his true self is nothing of the sort, rather, he’s actually a puppy - one that becomes smitten with just one girl and is loyal to the end (minus that inconvenient bout of amnesia). In being inexperienced with girls, he tries to play it off but his attempts to have game are easily seen. That innocence allows him to really be irrational sometimes and do things like wait at Namsam Tower in the freezing snow…for hours after a planned meeting (and then get sick and stuck in the observation tower). Along with that, there’s a willingness to do things that he wouldn’t normally do, like sacrificing his well-being to take a fierce beating from thugs or conquering his childhood fear and learning to swim because he’d rather drown than have to watch some other guy save his girl. So strongly powered by love for the girl that has his heart, it’s hard to not be charmed by his intentions to do things or plan events that will make a girl happy and show the feelings that he can’t express with his words. With good natured lines, like being a star that will never let go of his moon no matter what happens – your heart really can’t help but melt because you know he means this love until eternity.
Jessica Clark: I think the main reason I chose Baek Seung Jo is because not only is he extremely good looking and has lovely eyes but he plays hard to get. I loved how he teases by pinning Ha Ni to the bed yet is still the arrogant bad boy he always was. Also I love how secretive he is, he hides his feelings yet shows them in a weird way, such as kissing Ha Ni when she is asleep and she doesn’t know about it. It gives him that mysterious characteristic which makes me go crazy over him. Although he can be a charmer, he can charm any girl with just his smile and he uses it as a weapon against Ha Ni in the sports day relay event just to make her team loose the race since he knew how much she liked him! I think another thing which made me go crazy for him was how he, even though he never showed it, was always there looking out for Ha Ni and protecting her secretly like a guardian angel. When Ha Ni ever needs help, Seung Jo is always there somewhere helping her, especially when it came to the exams. I also think he would be a great guy to date if you can keep up with his sometimes spiteful ways of speaking even though sometimes he does mean them in a good way. I’m sure my grades would shoot up having him as my teacher. I think it would be great if Seung Jo would help me with my studies — it would probably make me love him more in the long run!
Mercy Chia: When you think of bad boy millionaires in Korean Dramas, who comes to your mind first? For me, I think of Kim Joo Won from Secret Garden. Why, you ask? Well, first of all, he is the best example of a bad boy millionaire as you can tell from the way he lives and the way he treasures his hand made Italian track suit. He is the CEO of his company yet he has all the free time in the world, and you can tell that he is used to getting things the way he wants. However, despite his slight eccentricities, you can’t help but love him for it because it just cracks you up. Throughout the drama, his actions bring much laughter to the audience, especially when it comes to matters involving his track suit. Finally, the most attractive trait I see in him is how much he cares for Gil Ra Im. They come from two completely different worlds: him being the son of a rich and well bred family, and Gil Ra Im being a stunt actress living humbly with a close friend, but Kim Joo Won does his best to express his love for Gil Ra Im. Successful, good looking, funny, and caring. What more could you ask for in a guy?
And now you all have the floor — do you agree or disagree with our Round Table?
