Today’s Daily Rant is going to be about the driving methods of a lot of countries in Asia and how safe exactly it is to cross the road.
Having just gotten back from a nice and tiring trip to China this summer, and still quite a bit jet-lagged, I would like to take this time to rant about how dangerous it actually is to be simply walking on the streets (and I do mean the sidewalk) of most Asian countries.
For example, if you’re in a city that still allows motorcycles, be forewarned that those motorcyclists will go anywhere and everywhere. By that, I mean, on the road lane meant for just cars, on the lane meant for just motorcyclists, and you guessed it, on the sidewalks where there are herds of people walking. Always be on the lookout and never let your guard down.
Of course, now it’s time for how people drive their cars. Let me take a time to ask a very simple, but logical question: if there’s a two lane road, how many lanes of cars are there supposed to be on that road? If you’re thinking two, that might happen if you’re in the Western side of the world, but not where I saw it. A two lane road became a four lane road and there were still tons of people jaywalking (illegally crossing) across the streets. Of course, that’s not even the worse of the driving methods I’ve seen used.
You might also think that people would actually wait for the go/green light sign while crossing the streets, but no. I saw this old granny cross the street while the police officer in the middle of the road specifically was tweeting at her through his whistle. When asked why didn’t he shout at her more, the police officer replied: “she doesn’t see it/she doesn’t care.”
Yep, there’s my huge long rant about the driving in Asian countries, don’t think it’s only in one country, because it honestly isn’t only specifically that one country.
