2011 has been a busy year with over 30 KPOP artists debuting in the music industry alone, I’d hate to think how many debuted in the JPOP or CPOP world. A new year means a whole new range of music videos whether they are good, bad or just plain weird. Here are 5 nominees for the Weirdest Storyline MV of the Year and only one can be the winner of this award.

Orange Caramel - Shanghai Romance.
Orange Caramel have started to gain a reputation for weird concepts and unique music videos to match then but the recent MV was quite questionable. The music video was entirely Chinese-themed with modified Chinese attire and Chinese paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling but the entire storyline was just random. Offering a man a cup with a dumpling in water was eyebrow-raising. Then they had to go kidnap and tie up the men because the girls were being ignored. Taking it to the extreme I see.

MY DRAGON - Nijigen Complex
The entire PV had me splitting my guts. Four grown Japanese men dressing up in Halloween costumes and then putting their own spin on the story of Little Red Riding Hood as well as the death of Snow White, it doesn’t get any weirder than that! The man in the bumblebee costume has to be my favorite, his beard just gets me every time.

DJ KOO - Music Makes One ft. Tasha
This track was the 2011 MAMA theme song and it is a pretty hefty club track. The music video of course has to live up to the hype of the song so the directors put in some trippy effects, a creepy bunny, and an interesting storyline. Basically in the end, the man gets a plane ticket to travel to the MAMA event in Singapore.

Bird Tongchai - Why the Tears
Although the overall music video was very heartbreaking, the storyline was just really confusing. I understand the jealously part with the man wanting to kill the male lead because he was with the female lead but how did the male lead drift/swim all the way to land while bleeding to death? The music video is actually a tourism video for Thailand so you can see why the storyline is weird to me. What’s the message? Go to Thailand, fall in love and get shot?

Tablo - Bad
I’m a huge fan of Tablo and I understand that the music video for “Bad” is trying to tell the audience that love is bad but the storyline is just a bit too weird to understand. A couple is having major mood swings. One moment they are loving each other and the next moment they are making each other bleed. The male smashes glass into the female’s head and starts pulling her hair, next moment they are seen hugging it out - what?

And the winner for Weirdest storyline MV of the Year award goes to:

MY DRAGON - Nijigen Complex. When you combine the outrageous outfits with the storyline and video effects, you get the epitome of weird. The way they represented Snow White’s death was hilariously strange and Little Red Riding Hood’s face roaming around every will creep you the heck out.
