Ningin Round Table: Which idol would you want to take you to prom?

The Ningin Round Table is a feature in which we pose an Asian entertainment news-related question to Ningin writers and they give us their colorful opinions and thoughts on the matter. Prom is just around the corner! We asked our writers: “Which idol would you want to take you to prom?” Here’s what some of them had to say:

Victoria Huynh: My ideal prom date is no other than Jay Park! I have a feeling he would ask a girl to prom in a cute and dorky way so that would be fun to watch. On prom night, he would be a complete and perfect gentleman in his tux or suit. He looks so good in formal wear, as seen in his New Breed album photo-shoot. He would make jokes throughout the night and just have fun so it wouldn’t ever be awkward. (And as for prom pictures, I’m a bit on the shorter side so Jay’s height would be perfect for me.) And even though he would look like a perfect gentleman, he would also have his bad boy side so in the middle of the dance, he would probably lead me out and we would ditch prom and he would take me to some sort of b-boy competition (I just love watching Jay dance. It’s so amazing.) or we would go to an amusement park…or that’s how I imagine it. But all in all, I think Jay would make a great prom date because he just seems like a person you can have fun with and he’ll definitely make prom memorable.

Jessica Ng: Although my prom days are over, it doesn’t hurt to daydream about a perfect prom date every once in a while. As a KPop fangirl, there are many guys to choose from. After thinking over several different candidates, I decided that I would want B1A4’s Jinyoung to take me to prom! Age is an important factor for me, and he definitely fits that requirement of being at my age or slightly older. Also, he is a leader. I am quite shy when it comes to formal events like dances, so I would probably be depending on him to take the lead. Jinyoung’s sweet smile will be able to encourage any doubts or worries I happen to have, and his little ageyo moments will be entertaining and amusing. A little cute present for the event could be anticipated from him, and I have no doubt I would love it, haha. Teddy bear? Jewelry item? I can only imagine. To some, Jinyoung might appear girly, but to me, he’s man enough to be my date! Let’s just hope he wouldn’t try to put on makeup or dress up in a way that would make me look like I’m the guy…

Alexandria Faust: Prom is very much like a right of passage for most high schoolers, so you have to make it very memorable. You need the perfect dress, hair, make up, shoes, etc.; more than anything, you need the perfect date. I would say if I could choose anyone as a date it would have to be Lee Seung Gi. Lee Sung Gi is very much a gentleman and he’s very laid-back yet fun at the same time. He is someone you could really show off to friends as being a ton of fun to be around and joke with, but also very serious about the whole prom deal. He may be 25, which is too old for prom in some places, but he really could pass off for much younger. His age just gives him a bit more maturity, and the sense to treat you like a proper lady, and that is what makes him the most ideal choice for a prom date in my opinion.

Sandy Lee: With the upcoming prom season approaching quickly, one cannot help but think of celebrity prom dates after hearing a couple of success stories. The idol that I would want to take me to prom would be none other than EXO’s Kai. Although they have taken 100 days to debut, it’s not like we haven’t seen much of Kai himself yet. (Heck he manages to use his teleporting skills to go into nearly every single EXO teaser alive.) We have seen how charismatic he is on stage and on the dance floor, but how shy he really is when he has to do interviews. Kai’s dancing skills would definitely be put into good use on the dance floor at prom, and his shyness could be quite endearing as well. Another reason why I’d want Kai to be my prom date is because he’s born in the same year as me! He would fit in with the rest of the crowd and I doubt Asia has events such as prom to celebrate the end of high school, so it’d be another cool event to go to since he has actually graduated in Korea. Having a good looking prom date isn’t the end of it either-I could possibly get his autograph as well and have him perform one of EXO’s songs on stage! Yes, Kai as my prom date would be a dream come true. I think I’ll stick to brining a life-sized cardboard cut-out of him as my date though.

Pamela Sit: When I first got this question I was like: ‘Oh shoot, how am I gonna choose?! They’re so many choices!’ I haven’t gone to my prom yet since it’s going to be next year, but I’ve dreamt many times of who I would want to go to my prom with (kekeke). Would I go to prom with a princely type like JYJ’s Jaejoong or Yoochun? Or would I go with a more ”bad boy” guy like Jonghyun of SHINee? (I don’t know, I’ve always thought of him as a bad boy type of guy kekeke). There are so many choices in the K-Pop world, but I have finally narrowed down my choices to… drumroll please…. Key of SHINee! Now some of you might be like: ‘Oh your choice is weird… I would go for a more manly/princely type.’ but I have my reasons! For one, he’s my ultimate bias in K-Pop (hahaha) but then he also knows how to have a fun time (anyone heard of his drinking stories? Kekeke). We all know that he is famous for being the secret member for all K-Pop girl groups but also, he can actually dance. Like not just girl group dances but hard core dancing. I remember in an interview, the SHINee members said that Key can copy Taemin’s moves exactly and he didn’t even have all the intense training that Taemin had. This means he can work the floor and show people what he is all about (and to not judge him by his feminine looks.) Also, Key dresses to impress. He is the Almighty Diva of SHINee that has too many clothes to fit inside his closet, so he is bound to not fail you on the looks section. Another reason is he speaks English so it’ll be a lot easier to communicate with him and for others to communicate with him too. Furthermore, I think he is just so chill, I would probably treat him more as a friend that I’ve known for ages than an idol that became my date for the night. Another reason why he would be an awesome Prom date is that he is the umma of SHINee, meaning he knows how to take care of people. With that in mind, I know I will be safe and sound with him if he were my date. Also, I’m pretty sure he would be an awesome accessory for the night too. Nothing like having a K-Pop idol being your date for Prom and bragging all about it to your K-Pop loving AND non K-Pop loving friends! So there you have it, Key of SHINee is the idol I want to take me to prom!
